We bought a cencom unit for our pc and was told that the software was online somewhere for free. Is this the case or do you have to purchase it form somewhere?

I haven't played with a CenCom in a while.
It COULD be because you were trying to read a unit that was programmed with older software. Reading the programming from a Cencom controller was not supported until this latest software revision. And I know that this software version doesn't necessarily play well with older versions.
I'll bet that if you created a new profile, dumped it in the unit, and then tried to read it back, it would work OK. Obviously though, that would overwrite your existing profile.
Kinda like when you read and rewrite a newer Motorola radio.. you need the newer software to program new features, but when you use the newer software, it changes the codeplug so that it can only be read with that version of software or newer.

I think Bob's got it right.
Of course, UNLIKE Motorola, you can go create a codeplug from scratch and dump in it. I'd give that a shot.

How are you reading the unit?
The extract command does not work with the older CENCOM..
You need to program the unit from scratch or you are only able to clone it..
