Anyone know an easy way to put a black out switch in to kill the dome lights when the door is opened. Short of finding the feed to the light and putting a switch in line, is there an easier way?

Thanks,
Ryan

I don't know if there is an easier way than hunting it down and putting a switch in it. The Crown Victorias use a lighting control module that has a wire for this specific purpose, but I doubt that most other models do.

It may be best to find where the wiring is that senses a door being opened and work on that one.

Take the IP light dimmer switch and move it down all the way. When you feel it click, the interior lights go off and the IP lights are dimmed to the US DOT legal maximum.

If you want to make it permanent, take the headlight switch out and see if you can splice the wiring.

Your dome supervision wire is black / lt. blue and is located in the drivers kick panel or the harness that runs to the rear and is positive trigger.

Or maybe the Explorer does have one...

Probably have to disconnect/reconnect the battery after connecting or unconnecting that wire to make the LCM "relearn" its features.

There is a wire on the back of the head light switch that will overide the dome lights when it is put to ground.
I do not remember the color right off but will look it up in my notes at the office next shift .

Thanks for the info. I want to be able to kill the interior lights if the door is opened. Basically a "Black-out" or "Dark Car" mode. If it is as simple as rotating the IP light switch to the down postion, even better. I will have to check and see if that works. If not, it wont be that much of a pain to install a little toggle to ground that circuit as indicated.

Any other information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

"Dark Car" is specifically what the Crown Vic mode is called, there is information on it online, but it should be pretty simple if you find the wire these guys are talking about.

Again, don't forget to disconnect the battery to make the LCM "relearn" its settings.

Thanks for your input. Rolling the LCM IP switch all the way down does indeed kill the interior light. Thanks 007.
