Astro Saber from Smartzone down to Smartnet

Post by RADIO43 »

Group,

I recently bought a 800 MHZ Astro Saber III with Smartzone Trunking as an option and yes, it a legit radio. I am looking to downgrade the radio to smartnet software so that I can operate on a Type I trunk system. I just want to be able for the radio to do Type I,II, and IIi systems. Is this possible and what would the Big "M" charge for this. Thanks in advance.

All you need to do is change the Coverage option to None. That disables the wide coverage options for that system.
Lowband radio. The original and non-complicated wide area interoperable communications system

The ASIII cannot do Type I...Type IIi is as close as it gets. This is not a problem if you have a Hybrid system that can map Type II talkgroups to Type I fleets/subfleets. If is a true Type I only system, you need a different radio. Unless it's a flash option which doesn't show in the product catalog.

Group,

The system is a IIi system. Unfortunatley the radio is flashed with option Q361/G361 Digital APCO-25 IMBE Trunking (9600kb Control) which makes it improsible to do. If I remeber right, I downloaded a whored out code plug and that was able to do type 1 talkgroups. Thanks for the help guys.

Ah, you didn't specify 9600bps trunking was in it. In that case, you're right it won't even do Type IIi.

The firmware to run 9600 is different from 'regular' versions...only certain ones support it. You may be able to force in a 3600bps codeplug & have it work, or you might require an actual FLASHport upgrade to change the firmware...I don't know, never tried it.

TPG is the expert here - but it appears that you have a codeplug [Flashcode] that is not compatible with the firmware in your unit. Version 7x firmware does not support 9600 baud trunking operation.

The codeplug you have will allow the RSS/CPS to show that you can select all the right fields for operation on P25 trunking but the radio requires version 6x firmware to actually operate correctly on one of those systems.

Your solution is to load the radio with a correct codeplug.

xmo is correct.

The only 9600 Baud Astro 25 firmware is loaded in Host Version 6 for portables (version 10 for mobiles)

If you load a proper codeplug in the radio 100004-000000 or even the mega -flash 599108-1C5E00.. it will do what you want. (IIi)

tpg and group,

This is unusual that it does not have a proper codeplug in it. This radio had Motorola Tags with correct serial number and Factory ID of Astro. If I could find an s-rec for that for this radio I would load it in.

The factory tags mean it wasn't parts built - which was mostly an XTS deal anyway.

If there is a factory Flashcode label that matches the flash that is actually in the radio that's one thing but odds are someone pushed a codeplug in there to add features without realizing the incompatiblity between the flash and the firmware.
