I've been messing around with several different batteries that my school uses on our HT750 radios. The radios were purchased sometimes last year, since the serial numbers on the units are 2004 and the batteries all are coded 442 and 443, so pretty late into 2004 at the time of manufacture.

Now, pretty much daily since then, these batteries (standard NIMH HNN-9008 Have been used on shifts averaging 4 hours each and then recharged between 7 am and 2 am (19 hours)

At any rate, some batteries are cell origin Japan, and others Indonesia, and I've noticed that (on my HT1250) The japanese cells don't hold a charge as well as the indonesian ones so I don't deal with those much, but one battery in particular, and the point of this thread however abstract it may seem for almost 2 am is that well, for the most part any indonesian battery will last in my radio around 24 hours on average, this is RX only. Except for one....

It charges to an awesome capacity, it'll power my radio for about 27 hours before it starts beeping at me and, well, a charge is due, but I left it sit charged up for a week and when I went to use the battery, it was half-dead and didn't last a very long time- a big disappointment to me, so the question I have is...

Is it possible to get the battery to hold a charge longer, or is it already toast after a little over a year?

I don't have access to an analyzer or conditioner, but can deep cycling a few times help it hold a charge longer... any tips? I've never come across anything like this before.

Maybe I should just get a new battery

I would just go for a new battery.
Some batteries last less then a year, others, five years. It all depends on your charging habbits and battery care.

Also, I find the NiMH batteries develop a high 'self discharge' rate. They naturally have a higher one than NiCD to begin with, but it can dramtically worsen with age. Quite often, our analyzer can't find a problem with them, but if you let a fully charged one sit overnight, you'll see it has lost significant capacity, or be dead altogether. In short, get a new battery.

Motorola batteries have an 18-month warranty. Send them in for free replacements.

Only the NiCD "Premium" batteries do. The NiMH (HNN9008) he's referring to do not...12 months only.
