No, I think they're all 160 - like the HT1550s are.

CDM 1550

Post by WFD44 »

Soory to break the news but your both wrong. I have a 128 channel conventional CDM1550.

There are severl variations. The newer ones will do 160 channels and the LS I believe is trunking with maybe only 16 channels conventional.

Check the model number and break down the features.

It is confusing, as there's several different models that all look the same.

The original CDM1550 I believe was 128 channels, conventional only.

Next came the CDM1550LS in both UHF & VHF...LTR trunking capable of a total of 160 modes, but only 16 in conventional (18 with no LTR systems programmed). No MDC in conventional, either.

Next comes the real confusion...the CDM1550LS+...but only in UHF...as far as I can tell the VHF carried on with the "LS" badge, but came with the "LS+" extra features...I don't know why. If they end with "5AN" in the model number, these units are identical to the "LS" units described in the paragraph above. If they end with "6AN" in the model number, then they can do up to 160 conventional channels, and full MDC signalling in conventional as well.

About 6 months ago, Motorola announced the VHF CDM1550LS was no longer being offered...and it's replacement was the CDM1550LS+...I have no idea why they were about 3 years behind the times compared to the UHF units.

There are no models with 255 talkgroups. I'd like to see the codeplug, if indeed there is.

If you have a VHF 1550, its probably 128 convention channels
if you have a 1550LS with a 5AN version its 16 or 18 conventional channels with no MDC and a trunking radio
any 6AN version or higher will be 160 conventional channels and most likely an LS+ model.

Can the 5AN models be upgraded/flashed to do MDC, and would this apply to all pro series HT/CDM radios? Thanks.

It's more than a firmware upgrade, as all Waris portables & mobiles use the same firmware. It's a complete model change...whether they have some special software that can do it, or whether they change out the board I don't know, as I haven't sent any in to get it done. The depot is the only place you can get it done though.
