So, I'm contemplating what would be involved in changing an Astro Saber from a R split to a S split. Besides swapping out the RF board and realignment, there's the issue of codeplug.
Now, I've read a bit here on the board about what's involved with say, upgrading from a AS1 to an AS3, but what if you just want to change the model number from R to S? Can it be done by some combination of hexing and load with no pack/unpack, or am I just better off finding a S split codeplug with the model and features I want?
Silly question... changing Astro Saber R to S?

You've got it right. You have to find the right RF board, swap it out, and then load a valid S split codeplug with no pack/unpack using the appropriate software..akardam wrote:Now, I've read a bit here on the board about what's involved with say, upgrading from a AS1 to an AS3, but what if you just want to change the model number from R to S? Thats basically it. There is no hex editing involved.

Ok. I am greedily lapping up this knowledge, but I have more questions.
From reading the board here, it would appear that trying to use the "common" R03 Astro Lab software is a no-no, since it doesn't understand IMBE and could make a brick. So, it's out.
Conversely, the "common", R03 version of MTSX Lab would appear to work for this kind of proceedure.
So far, so good. Now, some clarification would be in order. It would appear as if though there is no way to "save" a codeplug to disk using the no pack/unpack option. So does this mean I have to have the donor radio in hand, read it with a no pack/unpack, and then write my radio with no pack/unpack?

Yes, there is. There's an option under F3 - Read/Write labeled Archive/Srecord Disk Files. After you've read your radio with no unpack, go there, enter a filename, hit whatever button is labeled Write Srecord, then when it pops you into the next screen, hit it again. Ignore the other options. When it comes time to dump it into the other radio, go back to Archive/Srecord, enter your filename, hit Read Srecord, then write it with no pack.akardam wrote:It would appear as if though there is no way to "save" a codeplug to disk using the no pack/unpack option.
