Saber Folks
I have a UHF Sys Saber III and was playing with getting it programmed up on the Ham bands, did that OK with that, but have an odd problem in that the Squelch has a delay before opening up.
For example I see the Red Led blink when I TX from another radio, and then about 1 sec later (maybe a little less) the squelch opens.
This is programmed on a conventional simplex channel, no scan, no secure, etc. Is their a setting that I'm missing that has a hold time or anything like that?
What settings might affect that delay?
Thanks, Saber Newbe
Sandy

If you are setting the squelch level via the RSS and transmitting to that radio to check the squelch action while accessing the service menu, that is normal, the RSS does not act fast enough to open or close the squelch as the radio's squelch is being controlled via the RSS first, and is NOT programmed into the radio until you properly exit from the service menu
It's best to use the service menu to set the lowest setting that closes the receiver, then move up a value or two at the most to keep simple hysteresis noises from triggering on false signals.
To ensure every channel programmed into the radio operates the same, hit the (copy all to all) key so that the squelch info is transferred to all channels and not left on a channel by channel basis.
F3 is the align radio parameter section, this includes Oscillator Warp, Low power, high power and special power, as well as battery save squelch.
F4 is Align channel parameters....
Squelch level, VCO modulation, reference modulation and battery save enable.
F5 is Align scan parameters........
Monitor hold time, RX and TX response time and priority squelch.
F4 in the service/alignment section is where the 'copy all to all' function is located(you already know that).
Any time the RSS is controlling the radio's functions, the timing relationships are changed due to the software interaction on the controls.
One other action you can take is to change or lower the RX and TX response timing under F5, this will make squelch action faster by setting both to a '1' instead of the default 3 or higher as set by the RSS upon initial use.
Normal Sabers are fairly easy to get up and running as opposed to the Systems models, which have a lot more screens and choices to select, all of which interact with other screens, so you have to be careful during setup, so you don't accidentally enable an option you will never use, especially if you chose to use the keypad to control radio functions, it gets tricky once you enable certain keys as most have dual or even triple functions assigned to them.
Good luck on programming your Saber, they have one of the hottest receivers available, even with a radio as old as this model is, it's still a tough competitor to many current models, and well worth owning.

Sabers...
I made one MAJOR boo boo here...the info posted was for the refular Sabers and NOT the systems model, but it should provide a good starting point to begin with, much is common to both models.
My bad!
Sorry about that!

Is secure enabled at all on your radio, even if it's not enabled on the particular personality you were testing? I had the same issue with my SysSaber, and the concensus based on my readings here and my tweaking of the radio seems to be that if secure is enabled in any way shape or form that you will get a 500-750ms delay in unmuting on the radio. Try disabling radio wide secure, and see if it improves.

Thanks to all, yes it's a SysSaber and I will have to figure out the RSS problem I have used an older version 3.0.2 that doesn't have control on some of the alignment parameters. And, no definitly not messing with it while in the alignment screens completely out of that aspect of programming (display returns back to the actual personality no Channel 1 or 2 as displayed while in alignment).
Yes, the radios do have Secure DES-XL, It is globally enabled for the radio, but I can't remember if the specific mode/personality has it. I'll bet this is part of the problem.
I did find a major design flaw in the Saber... The batter pack is too wide to fit into my cup holder on the center console
Besides the crazy RSS, it has a very nice feel and the audio is excellent, I dare say this but sounds better then the MT2k for some reason...very clean.
Thanks again, will keep at it more questions likely coming!
