Radio type??

Post by sta19capt »

I have a portable radio that I bought on eBay years ago. The FD is upgrading their radios and I want to know if the radio I already own is better or worse than the radios we are getting now.

As it stands I don't know the # of channels it's capable of or any of its capabilities actually. Can someone help me out here? There's no sn/model # on the rear of the case either.

It looks like a MT2000 with a top display only. There is no bump stop for the channel selecter it just spins around and around. There's no markings as to channels (1*3*5*7*9*11*13*15*) like on an mt2000. There's also a 2 position switch below the channel selector know. There's a 3 position switch and the 3 side buttons and ptt. The front of the radio just says MTX. There's no other markings anywhere. I know it's at least 32 channels programmed and VHF that's it.

Yeah that looks like the radio, but the tag located under the speaker grating and next to the mic just says MTX with no numerics. Is that a refurb case?

I'm only operating on 8 - 10 channels. I own this MTX?? radio, but the company is issuing HT1000. Also this radio compared to an HT1000 which would you choose?

Thanks for all the help

The MTX has the same RF board as the HT1000 and Jedi radios in the same RF band. Still a very good radio and should work well with the
'Company's' radios.

I would have your MTX completly checked out by a competent radio tech., the alignment section needs to be verified.
The RSS for your MTX is different than the HT1000.

They make the MTX838 with just the MTX label as well. Canadian, yes. Uses MTSX software.

What would really help, is the full model number of this radio, as that's the definitive answer to most questions.

The continuous rotary selector switch is a determining factor as to what model the radio is.

Could also be a 'nauganet' radio(stupid name).

But the model number is the BEST way to determine the options the radio has, bandwidth and power.

Specific models may allow certain options others don't have enabled, or can't be programmed due to differences in the controller.

We can decode the model number easier than looking at the radio, which tells nothing.

Top display, continuous rotary channel selector tells me it's a 99 channel portale, and the antenna appears to be an 800 Mhz. so it's probably a trunking model, but not a smartnet/smartzone capable radio since it's an 'export' radio....the model number tells all.....

Yes, you can put the radio into 'test mode'. Upon power-up, wait for the 'self test' screen to finish, then press the small side button directly above the PTT switch 5 times. I believe the first set of numbers which scrolls by on the screen is the model#, followed by serial# and I believe firmware version.
