New LTR System questions?

Okay, So poking around an LTR system.

Will be using and MSF5000 UHF radio.

What controller? Which manufacturer?

LTR or Passport?

Any thing I should know before venturing for channels from the licensing guy, and/or buying equipment?

Right know thinking of a single sight, single channel unit, but open to suggestions?

Thanks, Rob

I like Passport simply because it allows for individual radio access control onto the system. There are both programmable radio ID & factory ESN authentication schemes which can be implemented. Otherwise, it works just like LTR for the most part.

With regular LTR, access is "fleet" based, up to 255 fleets can be made active on the system. The problem with that is, once a company buys a few radios & get a fleet activated on the system, they can then load as many extra radios they want onto the system (assuming they can get the software/hardware to program them onto the system, or find someone else who will) while only paying for their original few.

The Raider Xtreme from Trident is a nice little Passport controller. The manual has the connections & software settings for the MSF5000, IIRC.

They also offer LTR controllers with the same physical package size. The Raider is the basic LTR controller, the Marauder is essentially a Raider, but with a built-in phone interconnect.

Those are the only LTR/Passport controllers I have experience with, so I can't comment on any others. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Todd,

Will all LTR radios do passport, or is that a special feature?

How much does that controller fetch?

Passport will deter, or not allow a butthead user to add additional radios? I am concluding that you have to input the actual radio individual ID in the controller to allow the radio access?

I had meant to mention that. No, only certain radios can do Passport such as the HT/CDM "LS+" series. I'm not sure what the Kenwood, etc models would be. They are of course more expensive than your run of the mill LTR models, so there's that to consider too.

Good question. I don't know off-hand because I'm not in sales. I do know it wasn't all that much more expensive than the regular LTR controller...whatever that cost was.

Yes, you can enable indiviual ID's one at a time, or in blocks of whatever. You can also use the factory ESN of the radio for extra secure validation. Since it's a unique value per radio, it would stop people from getting on the system even if they programmed a valid individual ID.

I can get you sick deals on LTR panels and Raider Xtreme etc. I got like 20 trident TNT's sitting right here. Combine that with an internet link and you have a little mini cell site. I think these can be ran single channel too. I have someone who can help you interface to MSF5000 no prob and I have manuals too. There may even be reciepts. They came from a 900Mhz LTR system bought by nextel in so. florida.

Steve

I didnt think you were, I just figured since you were looking for an LTR controller I have a gazillion at this shop that I sell my VoiP links to and they are just sitting around. I am really friendly with the owner of the SMR so I could probably ask him for you if you wanted one.
