Using and booting up Astro Spectra without control head?

Any news or tips on using or even booting a Astro Spectra without a control head?
Meaning is to use a astro spectra radio as a remote base radio, on a single channel. Wiring radio to the controller is not a problem but as it would work on a single channel, there is no true usage for a control head up at the site.

I dont see why programming it with one channel only and then jumper pin 20(A+) to pin 22(B+)on the the control head db 25 port on the front of the radio.
I know people have read and written to radios doing this but I can't speak for the functionality of it. But I dont see an issue with it.

To expand a little bit on what JMR said. You can boot the radio and program it with that method. And the radio is usable in that state, as you can get audio from the DB25 and I beleive Microphone connections as well. No channel or other controls though, you will only get the "Home" channel and default/last volume.
It will work with vRCH in this state though. FWIW

isnt this why motorola put a normal spectra mic connector on the front of the radio remote unit ?

That port is typically used for keyloading and programming of the remote drawer. IIRC it does not have the required lines to support microphone functions.

That "mic" port on the drawer unit is for keyloading a drawer unit that has securenent in it (spectra and astro spectra) and is also used for flash upgrading (astro spectra). It has nothing to do with using a mic on the drawer unit.

Have a look at the consolete manual.
There is an option for no contol head.
The circuit diagram should show it easily.
I will look on Monday as i have at least 2 Astro consoletes with no control head running.
In fact I'll go on MOL now and download it!

umm, ive personally seen an SP01 Astro Spectra with a mic directly connected to that mic port on the front of a draw unit with NO head.

Well that may be why it is an SP model or the person hacked the interconnect board. Here is a close up of a standard astro spectra remote mount interconnect right from the motorola manual. Its a close up of the keyloader port.
