I'm thinking of getting one of the AC versions. I've read that it takes a 16V input, is that correct? Does anyone know the P/N for a moto DC cord?

Lots of searching, but not quite the answers I'm looking for.

Edit............I finally got motos site to load and I found these........

You can roll your own for a lot cheaper. Just use a fused cigaretter lighter plug or make up a fused power cord with a 2.1mm power plug, center positive, and fuse it for 1 amp.

The wall wart with it is only rated for 300ma.

I made one with a connector so that i can change between a cigar plug, alligator clips, or power poles.

I'm pretty sure that's a 2.5 mm coaxial plug - same as what's on the Jedi, GP300, etc. rapid-charger shoes..

Nope. I just checked, i have a brand new in the package 2.5 and its too big. The 2.1mm is a perfect fit.

OK, you made me go look.. I took a 2.1 and a 2.5 and tried 'em on the Jedi shoe I had handy (my Saber sleeve is out working) and both fit - which would imply the socket is a 2.1, since the outside diameter is the same for both (5.5 mm) - but then I looked at the molded plug on the end of the Motorola power pack for the Jedi Charger -and it is definitely a 2.5 mm ID!

I guess I'll just have to go find my saber sleeve and try it, too. I know it worked fine with the 2.5 mm Jedi charger plug stuck into it, but that doesn't mean it's the right size .

What does the charger say as far as voltage? 16, 12, or 13.8?


Are these chargers worth $15, or is it better to go with the used rapid charger? (although there goes the mobile charging without going with a MVA)

The wall wart that come with mine is 16v 300ma. But the bottom of the charger says 13.8v 300ma.

Motorola probably just used the 16v ones because they had a bunch in stock, lol.

You have to remember also that it takes like 12-16 hours to fully charge a battery with the porta pocket charger, its not really intended to be used as a primary charger, more like a secondary charger to just keep the battery topped off during the day or while sitting idle in the vehicle.

An SVA is a really good option if you also wanted to use the radio while in the vehicle! Plus it has a built in quick charger, though it's not as quick as a desktop model.

Is there a part number for just the mobile bracket for the porta pocket?

I like the small size, as I'm in quite a few different places. I'd probably pick up a "real" charger at some point as well.

If I could find a complete SVA for a good price, I would. It just seems mos people are really proud of them, and price them in mind.

Yep, it cost me $50 for one with only a mounting bracket. I don't have a speaker for it yet, but i did manage to find the matching display mic for it.

Now i just have to figure out what thread the bracket bolts need to be, i got the bracket but not the hardware.

Take the SVA to a home center and you'll find the thread you need. It's on the
order of a 1/4 inch diameter, maybe a bit more, with a thread that is pretty spread out, not a fine thread at all.

Motorola probably supplied the porta-pockets with 16 V wall-warts because I highly doubt they're regulated and once under load they'll drop down to 12-13 V.

AFAIK, there is no good bracket for the porta-pocket charger - what Motorola calls a "bracket" is just a soft plastic doo-hicky to retain the wires.

Also, the charge rate provided is barely enough to keep up with an analog Saber in receive - on the order of 125 ma or so - no matter what voltage (within reason) you put into it.

If you intend to keep your batteries charged, an SVA would seem a much better idea, even if you only use it as a charger.

The newer "charges everything" shoe (NTN8831) works well (and will also charge an XTS or a Jedi), but it definitely requires more than 16V to work properly, so you need a special power supply for mobile use.

Tried that, it's at least 5/16 but must be metric, i have tried every standard size bolt, both fine and coarse thread, that i can.

What does Moto use in these, is it just a hex head bolt or?

Motorola loves metric!

If memory serves, all the thumbscrews Moto uses for their x9000 style speakers, heads, etc, are M6 standard thread. I want to say that a M8 would work for the SVA but I could be wrong. I don't have mine anymore to check.

Your local ACE hardware store or equivalent should have a decent selection of metric hardware. Honestly I'd take the thing down to the hardware store with you, that's how I've done all my matching :)

I brought my SVA, and the 8mm don't seem to work too well rither. It just does not go in too far. I tried both the 1.25 & 1.00 pitch bolts.

Ok, you made me look..

The main fasteners are 5/16" fine thread, which I believe is 24 t/in. The originals appear to be allen (hex) head cap screws.

BTW - AFAIK, the fasteners for the Spectra/Syntor/Micor heads and speakers are all 10-32, though there are several different styles and types of heads involved.

All (most) of the smaller Jap-trac stuff appears to use M4 fasteners.

Thanks, I'll hit Lowe's tomorrow to double check. They don't keep any metric stuff loose, so I had to bring my SVA into a gas station/grocery story, hardware store that has a very large selection of oddball hardware.

Nothing like getting 3/4" heatshrink tubing, a tank of gas, and banana pudding in one stop
