Only specially flashed XTS5ks are face programmable. 99% of them don't have that option enabled.

Yes, but according to CPS, you also lose half of the maximum channels in the radio (250 vs 512 or 8xx)

There are two FPP options available for the XTS5000:
Q52 - Federal Government Front Panel Programming Enhancement
Q53 - FCC Conventional Front Panel Programming and Radio Cloning
Motorola is very serious about not selling you the Q52 option unless you are a Federal Government customer.
Q53 requires the cloning do-dad be attached to enable FPP.

In simplier terms...
Its the same thing as the JT1000 process. The feds don't need a "programming key", but everyone else does.
Current FCC regs prohibit any commerical radio programming to be able to be changed "on the fly" like a ham radio. By needing a hardware programming key (attaches to the accessory connector), you comply (although loosely) with the regs. The government being the govt, it doesn't apply to them.

Oh got ya on that. I thought that one might allow for more fpp that the other. The old JT thing

very easy to work with, no silly dongle or programming battery...

The reason I ask is for wildfire. Often on lg fires with multiple agencies and thus multiple freqs. Having fpp with the ability to alpha tag is nice. One then does not have to ref. a piece of paper all the time.
The BK radio's are good for fpp including alpha but they do not like any moisture. Being that my agency does both wildfire and structural it would be nice to have one radio that say, "does it all." The /\/\'s radio family deals with water pretty well compared to the BK's.
Anyway that's why I ask. Of course when we go to the 700t we'll absolutely need two radio's as the USFS/BLM will not make the 700 jump.

Hello All,
The XTS FPP and FCC option are firmware options. You do not need a Special Key or Dongle program the radio. As long as the radio has the FPP option then the radio can be field programmed. These options are being sold to Federal agencies who have the need for field proramming. I work with these radios on a Daily Basis. Any other questions.

They are FLASHport options.
The FCC Q53 option DOES require the "programming key" to be attached to the radio in order for the FPP feature to work. The government Q52 option does not.

Should be able to do the same internal mod to a 5K that was done to a JT to avoid using the key on the side, just a guess though.

Would be interesting to see whats inside of the 5k key. With all these ibuttons, ESN's etc, who knows what M might have done. Of couse, the JT mod axed the use of the speaker mic. The software mod was easier
