OTACR and OTACS... could we make it work?

OTACR and OTACS... could we make it work?

Post by akardam »

A buddy of mine and I were musing on OTACR and OTACS the other day, mostly from the "wouldn't it be cool if..." standpoint. So, I thought I'd bounce it off the brains here.

My understanding is that both the older style LAPD flashcode 840101-8F0000-4 and the newer style flashcode 540001-070000-7 have both OTACR and OTACS enabled. Since the older radios were VSELP and the newer radios are IMBE as far as I know it would be safe to assume that not only does LAPD still use both OTACR and OTACS but that it will work with IMBE radios.

I've been told that the dispatchers can send OTACR and OTACS commands to individual radios straight from their dispatch computers. Based on an old post on the board it would seem that LAPD has their radios setup with one huge honking zone.

So, the questions would be:
1. Could we divine what commands are necessary to send to the radio to make it change its channel knob mapping?
2. Could we divine what equipment we would need in order to send said commands?
3. Would this still work on a radio with multiple zones?

Anyone have any thoughts on implementing a similar system? I think it would be something nifty for all of us out there with whored flashcodes to play around with.

Weird... I was thinking about this exact thing last night, went to do a search on it and pooof... you already asked.... did anyone ping you with any ideas?

That would be super cool to be able to have all modes in one zone and just change them to the 16 channel rotary switch depending on where we were going etc...

i would suspect that you would need a console that supports those commands as well.
