hey guys
just picked up a P1 150 mHz thinkpad and have a few questions about setting it up as a programing computer.

1. does anybody know how to get into the BIOS and change com port settings?

2. what should the com port setting be in terms of baud rate, flow control, ect, ect?

3. is this machine just plain ole too fast for doing ht600 and gm300s?

4. right now it has win95 so i am restarting in DOS mode... i have a copy of just DOS 622 lying around... should i erase windows and just put DOS on?

Can't help you with the other stuff but if you can dump Windows and load DOS that would be ideal. Nothing more satisfying than seeing a C prompt.

I have a Compaq Contura 386/25 laptop with DOS 6.22 on it for programming purposes. The display has been acting up lately but I've got another Contura I can raid for parts.

I think it's F1 or F2 to get into the bios, it's been a while since i have worked on one of those.

You would be better off just formatting it and going to straight ole DOS for programming.

If you have the latest version of the MT and HT software it should run fine on that. I have used the HT600 software on a Pentium 160 before and it worked ok.

First, it would be helpful if you'd post the model and "type number" which is normally on a black label on the bottom, next to the bar code.

With a few exceptions, the way to get into Thinkpad bios is to

START with the machine TURNED OFF.

Hold and CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key

WHILE HOLDING "F1" power on the machine and CONTINUE to hold "F1"

The machine should power up, POST, and in a few seconds, you'll see the "setup" screen. There aren't many changes you can make.


I don't believe you can change com port settings in bios for any of the Thinkpads, you need a "utility" to do that.

We really need the model and type of that machine.

OK, i formated the HD and installed DOS 6.22. also downloaded the utility program.

the model is a thinkpad 380E 2635 4OU. i downloaded the utility and have tried playing around with it but dont really know what im doing or what i need to do to ensure that the comm port is on and properly assigned/ addressed, ect.

on a 2nd note... anybody know how to get CD-ROM support for this machine when running in DOS 6.22?

aight... so the latest update....
i got the computer reading/ writing to an m120 but cannot for the life of me getting working with an ht600 or p200. all the RSS versions i have for both radios dont even pass the comm test (at least the versions that have comm tests). ive checked the cable to make sure its wired properly and the RIB is a radio stew RIB, which ive heard everybody else have good luck with... who knows. any ideas let me know. and thanks for the support thus far.

Did you check the com port setting in each program? The HT600 software got me on that one, the default was com port 2 and i had it connected to com port 1.

yea... i did a comm test on both ports 1 and 2. i dont have to restart the computer or exit out and reboot the software when switching comm ports in the software though, do i?

A P1 is way too fast for Genesis-era radios. Bust out the 486/25 or 386/33 and it'll work.

a machine thats too fast would even make the comm test fail? i thought id read posts with people sucsesfully using a p1 on ht600s....

btw... i did also try it with a 75mHz 486 toshiba satallite... same results... i was able to program an m120 but not a ht600.

You need the latest version of HT600 RSS for it to reliably work on anything faster than a 386/486 33MHz computer...version 2.03.02 was written specifically with dual independant timers to help with faster computer compatibility. Works on my 1.7GHz no problem. Has to be that version though...even 2.03.01 won't work.

The latest version of HT600 RSS is R03.01.00 and it seems to run fine at any speed.

I found that 2.03.01 and earlier did not like anything faster than a 386/16, it was touchy on even a 33MHz 486.
