Beside just getting ahold of a Saber III VHF, I think that I have probably ended up with a Saber III UHF unit that has a band split of 403-435MHz. Can I purchase PA, VCO,RX,FDS modules for that Saber so I can use it at 438-470, or am I stuck?

Hi K,
Yes - but a better way might be to purchase a Saber 1 (or Syssaber 1, depending on what you have) that has the range you want, as Model 1 sabers are going pretty cheap nowadays and that way you get all the parts..and some others you might need one day, like battery shoes, etc..

1. Get a UHF Saber 1 with a 438-470 mHz bandsplit.
2. Put the shield from your no-good Saber 3 on the Saber 1.
3. Program the radio with the shield with an H44SAK or QXK RSS.
You now have a Saber 3 that is the correct bandsplit that works fine.
Changing the shield is a pain with regard to getting the main flex to
plug into the main board, so be careful or get some help. It's easier
to do if you temporarily remove the four-pin plug-in crystal next to the socket.
Plugging in the audio and mic flex is not as difficult. The Saber 1 is the
same radio as a Saber 3 but it doesn't have the fancy shield with the
keypad, display, and memory.
I just did this exact operation and it worked fine. It's a lot cheaper and
easier than buying modules, switching them, retuning, etc.

Hi Tom,
Excellent idea! One thing, tho - you will still have to re-tune, because the tuning data is contained in that front shield.. Tho you could read all the values out and manually transfer 'em..
