I'm at the point of ripping my hair out...

I've got an aftermarket rib-less cable and want to flash-upgrade my GP-1280 (MPT1327 version of HT1550). The cable lacks the bootcontrol pin (12), so I've added one myself.

Problem is I can't get the radio to go into bootstrap mode. I've tried shorting pin 12 to both signal ground (pin 7) and RS232 ground but nothing works.

Am missing something really obvious?

You didn't state what exact procedure you performed to get the radio into bootstrap mode, but if you haven't, after you pull the bootstrap pin low you need to physically remove and replace the battery with the radio's power switch on. When you replace the battery with the pin low, you should not hear the powerup self test beeps and it should be in bootstrap mode.

I've followed the instructions in the flashgrade software, including the remove-battery powercycle. Nothing. The radio just gives self test beeps and starts normally.

According to all the schematics I've read, pin 12 should be shorted to signal ground, but from the photo on batlabs the OEM ribless cable looks like it has pin 12 going straight to pin 25 which would be jumpered to pin 1 with the flash adapter which would be shield/ground on a 25-pin connector. Still, shorting pin 12 to RS232-level ground doesn't work either.

I'm stumped. Perhaps there might be some fault in the radio?

get a real rib, a real cable, and the flash adaptor and you won't have any problems. and the mpt1327 isn't a waris radio or even close to the ht1550.

MPT-1327 refers to a publication by the brittish Radiocommunications Agency, now replaced by OfCom (Office of Communications). It describes a trunking radio network protocol. It is not a radio model.

The Motorola GP1280 however IS a Waris radio with the same physical package as a HT1550 but with European firmware capable of MPT1327 signalling (CK).

Try another housing or change the radio connector.Often the the bootcontrol line is damaged by water or sweat.

I will open it up and check the flex connectors. Maybe it's full of gunk inside...

Otherwise, shorting pin 12 to pin 7 on the accessory connector should work right?

Crap. It looks like I have a broken flex.
