Hello,

I am looking to purchase my first pair of Sabers. I would like to use them for GMRS, and very possibly business band usage. For the latter I would like the SecureNet capability. A Saber II or III would seem like it would work for me, as I will most likely use them just as walkie-talkies for projects.

After doing my research and reading for this forum for hours, however, I have more questions than answers. What is the best way to purchase them? I've read so many stories about stolen and counterfeit radios that now I'm a bit nervous.

Also, I am unclear as to whether Motorola is still selling the RSS software for these, or if I will have to take them down to the shop for the rest of my life.

Either way, I willing to pay the money to keep everything proper - and more importantly - reliable.

I almost bought a pair of cheapies, but I appreciate the quality of mission critical equipment in a big way, and I have heard these radios are one of the best.

So, what should I as a newbie look out for? Where besides Ebay and this board could I find quality hardware? Finally, how should I care for and feed it (them)?

First off....WELCOME to Batlabs!

When researching Saber models, look for the band split you will use the most, IE...Ham: 144-148 Mhz.

Business/MURS: 150-160 Mhz(within that range).

OR.....

UHF...
Ham: 440-450 Mhz.

Business/GMRS: 450-470 Mhz.

Information abounds for the Saber series radios, you should have no trouble getting all the data you need to choose the best models for your needs.

But a word of caution first..

Unless you are comfortable with module swapping and RSS alignment of the Saber radio, stay away from the Ebay specials that are listing Government band Sabers in the 403-433 Mhz. range, they will not work on the 440 ham band without a module swap and realignment.
