OK, I'm ashamed to have to ask this, but I just can't remember what I need to know. What do the indicators ("horizontal bars") mean in the scan program mode, as in the top bar means this, and the middle bar means that?

The control head should indicate through letters on the side of the display what each indicates...
--One bar means per-channel, non-user-programmable scan.
--The lower and upper bar (two bars) means per-channel, non-user-programmable priority scan.
--Two bars (lower and middle) means user-programmable scan and...
--all three means user-programmable priority scan.
Hold down the scan button to program the user scan, temporarily press the 'sel' button to add members, or delete them, hold the sel button down for priority 1 and 2 selection.
While scanning, there should a green LED to indicate as such, pressing the 'sel' button during scan toggles the various scan types listed above. The "non user programmable" scan lists are done up in the RSS.

You can also download a nice PDF file of the MaxTrac user's manual from the Motorola/MaxTrac page on repeater-builder.com:
