Encryption on Saber & Astro Saber

Post by LAPD_Astro »

Hello,
I have several Saber radio which are SecureNet radios but them have no securenet modules installed.
I want upgrade them to SecureNet, do I only have to have the modules (which are loaded with the same key) and attach them to the Saber radios? One System Saber I have shows "keyfail" when I switch to secureNet mode.

I also have several Astro Saber which are analogue as there is no digital mode flashed :-(((
I saw on ebay that the Astro Saber have different modules. They are DES-XL ENCRYPT MODULES and cost 125.- dollars each. Is that a good price? If they are keyloaded with the same key do I have to just enable the secureNet option with the Astro Saber CPS or do I need the keyloader for that?

Thanks indeed for your answers.

Saber Encryption

Post by Hartley »

Hello,

The Saber and System Saber radios can use the same modules (not all - check the "Sticky" or search the board for encryption module compatibility). All must be loaded with keys using a keyloader AFTER they are installed in the radio, and the key will be lost (after a minute or so) if the radio does not have a charged battery attached. The modules for Saber & System Saber are common on eBay and cheap at the moment ($20 each or so).

Astro Saber uses a different module, but it also must be loaded with a key AFTER it is installed in the radio. You can remove the battery and not lose the key with the Astro Sabers, however - IF you activate "Infinite Key Retention" in the RSS/CPS . They also require a keyloader to set the keys - if you are using DES-XL, it can be the same keyloader as used with the Saber/System Saber - a 3011DX model.

$125 for a DES-XL Astro module (you can use them in Astro Spectra as well) seems high - about half that is more reasonable.

Hello,

thnaks for the quick answer. I have bought DES-OTAR encryption modules. Can I program them with the 3011DX, too or do I need a different keyloader for doing that?
I will ask for a better price on the Astro-modules. ;)

So because the modules have to be loaded AFTER they are installed in the radio it seems that I need a keyloader. I will try to find one on ebay.

Thanks

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

A 3011DX loader will load both the ASTRO radios and the older radios.

As long as both radios are using the same encyption type, they should talk to each other....

DES to DES
DES-XL to DES-XL

DES to DES-XL will NOT work, etc. Even though both are DES based, the -XL, OFB etc varients are different.

Just to add to what PJ said, you can use a DES-XL module and talk to DES modules and vice versa, but you MUST disable the XL in the DES-XL module via the software.

I have discovered that I have several encryption modules in some of my Astro Saber, I just love them ;) (the radios).
One module from an Astro Saber III is the "NTN 1153D". I haven´t found them in the SecureNet modules list. Does anyone know what kind of module it is?
Then I have modules "NTN 1158 DSP01" DVI-XL ENCRYPTION VAR".

Another question: When I have 2 Astro Saber II with NTN 1158D installed, with which keyloader do I have to load the key?
How is it done? How do you operate a key loader? I have once possed one but sold it :-(

The last question: When I have an Astro Saber with NTN 1158 installed and then just remove it, does the radio works well or are there changes to be made, e.g. by the CPS?

I really do appreciate your answers. Thanks a lot

DES-OTAR

Post by Hartley »

Hi Again,

All good info - one warning - the DES-OTAR modules may not work in the "regular" Saber, depending on what exact model you have. They should work fine in the System Saber, however.
Also remember that when using an OTAR module, you have to load BOTH keys.

Modules

Post by Hartley »

Hello,

The NTN-1153D is a DES-XL module, and can be keyloaded using either a 3011DX (older style) keyloader or a properly flashed KVL-3000 (newer).

The 1158 modules are DVI-XL, which would require a different keyloader - I don't know if an Astro-capable "old style" keyloader exists for DVI-XL, but a properly flashed KVL-3000 would handle it (big bux, however!) DVI-XL will NOT communicate with DES-XL.

If you remove the module from the Astro Saber, you should "un-check" the "Encryption Hardware Installed" area or it will be complaining about it every time you turn it on (it will work OK, though)

Okay, Thanks for the answers ;)
I have bought 2 NTN1153 DES-XL modules for the Astro Saber on ebay, and a whole package from another ebayer.

I have 3 NTN1158 DVI-XL modules here which I don´t need as they require a different keyloader. does anyone need them? They are for Astro Saber ! ......... Or does anyone have a keyloader fitting these modules to sell?

Thanks a lot

Another question

Is the cable from the 3011DX keyloader to the Saber radios the same cable from Keyloader to Astro Saber? So: Does the cable for the Saber also works with Astro Saber?
