I have read that remote kits have been sometimes known to cause the dreaded EEPROM CS ERROR, and sometimes they do not. It may be safer to do it direct onto the radio, but if it works fine it should be OK.

I've programmed mine over and over and over through the remote head and never had a problem.

motorola claims that if you use their oem cable that it will program with no problems and i've done dozens with it.

I have done about 20 CDM's several times each with the cable I made but i guess YMMV.

if your using the aftermarket splitter that lets you use 2 remote heads it will not let you program. you have to take the splitter out of line to program. i cant remember the make of the splitter. we have that issue with our chiefs cars. we have one head in the front and a head mounted in the rear of the suburban for command post operations.

If by remote kit you mean what changes the radios from dash-mounts to trunk-mounts, I've programmed more than 100 trunk-mount CDMs via the mike connector on the control head without issue. All programming equipment is Motorola.

the set up we use has a remote head in the front a remote head in the rear. the radio is mounted under the rear seat. the two heads plug into the spliter then from the splitter to the radio. its just a remote mount kit with an extra head. if we try to program with everything connected it wont progam. if we remove the splitter and plug one of the remote heads into the radio it programs. like i said i cant remember the make of the splitter its a small black box and im sure it has some electronics in it.
