Hi...I have a VHF Jt1000....my question is about the small black piece of foam that sits behind the speaker, and when the radio is opened is stuck on the metal shied right behind the speaker housing......after the radio is opened and closed a few times this piece of foam starts to get twisted and crickled, and eventually falls off....is it neccessary to have it on....and how do I order this piece of foam? it looks like Motorola just stuck it on with some clear tape from the factory...is there a part number for this foam, ALL Jedi radios should have the same thing behind the speaker, attached to the main radio housing and it should be the same foam? Motorola likes to use tape on alot of their radios? like my Spectra has what looks like factory masking tape when you take off the control head, the tape is holding that wire/cable in the groove??? anyway, does anybody know what foam thing i am talking about? and is it neccesary? it seems like its there to keep the speaker housing from rubbing on the shield? and to keep it snug against it? and if it is neccesary how do I order it? and how do I attach it? thanks, david KD6RFS

I have noticed this as well. My guess is that: (A) If the radio is smashed, dropped; whatever, it prevents at least some damage from the board, and (B), I have noticed that when the piece it out, when I turn up the volume louder, that the speaker has kind of a vibrating sound, so, I guess this would prevent that as well.
I just used a piece of 3M foam (Single-Sided Sticky) off of a foam-roll I had laying around and placed it in; this seemed to keep things running fine.

Hello. I have about 10 Jedis and only a few have foam. Most of mine dont. I think it depends on when the radio was built etc. I know one of my Jedi's had a loud feedback sound at hi rx volume. The foam rubber got rid of the noise. Seems like a cheap fix. Good luck. GARY N4KVE

i go down to ace hardware and get the little round pieces of felt wtih sticky on the one side and put them on the magnet of the speaker in replace of the old one. works perfect.

but mine seemed to be a small piece attached to the shield, not the magnet behind the speaker? It was attached on the shield with some tape from the factory, but above where the magnet would go into the round hole in the shield....It seemed the foam was making contact with the corner of the speaker frame (the gold clip that goes around the speaker and holds it in)...should I replace it where it was orginally, or like the other member said place it behind the speaker magnet? that kinda seems like a better place? thanks, David KD6RFS

That's exactly why it is there. Same in SP50's and some other radios as well.
