I have a saber I uhf non-secure. it powered up fine and i read the radio. when i was done configuring the cp and went to turn on radio to program it would not power up. are there some kind of internal fuse on sabers?

Did you disconnect the programming cable, remove and replace the battery and try it again for the heck of it?

Other than that there is a fuse inside, a picofuse, it stands vertically off the mainboard near the contacts at the bottom of the frame. Pull the guts out and then remove the front shield to see it.

I have had the radio not seem to power up when the programming cable is connected. Alto connecting and disconnecting the programming cable at the radio with the radio ON is not a good practice either.

I traced this behaveier to the RIB/Computer state. Usally the RIB is not powered/turned on. Unpluging the programming cable at the RIB works ok.

As Scott pointed out, the picofuse is on the lower portion of the radio frame, but there are older versions of the Saber that have a fuse located on the main board on the component side, and not near the power connections.

And it's not a picofuse either, but a tiny rectangular ceramic(white) bodied fuse of the same current rating (5A).

The blasted thing is less than a 1/4" in length and easy to miss.

Pretty much the same type fuse the MTS2000/HT1000 radio family uses, as well as the Visar, but the Visar has that fuse just above the B+ pin on the component side(left pin, looking down).

I have seen these fuses with different body colors ranging from white to clear, with a few showing the fusible 'link' on the top of the body.

But as Scott stated, the picofuse is 'normally' located on the lower right side of the radio frame as you are looking at the front, and the same goes for the Systems models as well.[/b]
