Saber II Talkaround

Can the rocker switch on a Saber II be utilized in any way to enable simplex operation on a repeater channel the way it can on a Saber 1E?

I dont think so. Ive only seen SII with the switch as securenet on or off. That was an option with the S IE
Saber II Securenet changed to S1E...

You would have to install a Saber 1-E shield to do this.
It's been done and I once owned one. The way you
could tell it had been done was the radio was a Saber
I Securenet with a bypass module installed in the long
case but the radio operated as a 1-E. It was quite a
Kluge and caused a lot of discussion but it worked fine.

Tom......So that was a Saber I that worked as a Saber IE? I'm asking about doing it with a Saber II. Would you have to do the same thing and would it limit the features of the SII? Thanks.

Billy,
Forget about it being a Saber 2. When you change the shield
it would become an S1E. What I don't know about is how you
go about changing the switch wiring, though I'd bet it's already
wired to do the zone change on the switch when you put in the
other shield. Again, you can not make an S2 into an S1E and
have any features except those of an S1E. The Saber 2 goes
away when you change the front shield. The main board of a
Saber is a 12-zone board, and when you add the shield it stays
a 12-zone board if it's a Saber 1 (no components on the shield
except a speaker and microphone), or if you put on the 2, 3, or
1-E shield it becomes one of those units because the additional
memory and functions (including the display on the 2 and 3
models) are mounted and wired on the shield. (The display on
the factory-made 1-E Sabers doesn't do anything at all and
can't be used.)
The radio I had was originally a Saber 1 Securenet which was
modified to be a Saber 1-E with a bypass module.

The Saber IE was a completely different 'animal' in that the front shield and memory was capable of ONLY 24 channels, which you could program as repeater and talkaround or 24 repeater frequencies.
The toggle function was mask programmed into the radio to perform this function only as I recall, and you could not program it to perform other functions.
If you programmed the radio as a Saber I secure, then the toggle would operate the secre on/off, and that's all, it loses the ability to toggle between zones as you would be capable of doing with the IE.
You would also lose the 12 'extra' channels the IE allowed as you would have changed the radio's operating parameters to that of a restricted Saber I.
I may have to dig into me codeplug files and take a look at the IE options and see if I can also dig up a IE memory board to play with.
Normal Sabers like the model II and III have 10 zones of 12 channels each, as well as selectable PLs and scan lists in model II radios that have scanning enabled, usually all with the (CN) suffix are scan capable.
The Saber IE gives you 24 channels that the base model Saber I only allows 12.
All saber radios are capable of emergency IDs if you have the multi-function switch, the switch is already capable of emergency, even if your toggle does nto have the button in the middle, you can change it with one that does and program the emergency ID in the RSS under options(F4).
Even if a Saber does not have the switch installed, you can install one and get those features through RSS, all models are capable of this, only certain ones never had the switch installed.(redundant)
