I'll have to assume that it all worked fine before he pulled it apart !
It seems like the control head isn't talking with the rest of the radio properly. If all the segments light up, including the icons like the speaker, scan, etc., but they never go away, either the CH micro isn't getting the right signals, or it's stuck in some strange mode.
Make sure the flat cable is plugged all the way in at both ends. It's not easy to put it all together unless you orient the radio and control head just right. Also, make sure the tinned contacts at both ends of the cable are clean; wipe them off with some alcohol or other good contact cleaner.
Dayton still has a couple of hours left - try to buy another one !

Wow, that's way too much for an 800 MHz radio, unless it's been fully converted to transmit and receive on 900 MHz.
Hope that the cable just isn't in all the way. It doesn't seat in too far, between 1/8 and 1/4 inch, but it has to be in straight so it sticks up perpendicular to the connector edge. You shouldn't see any tinned contact material showing up when it's fully inserted.
There is a 90 degree bend/twist in the cable; I'd have to pull one of mine apart to give you the orientation and better describe it, but if the radio is mostly working, I'd say it's in the right way, just broken or not in far enough.

I still have a sneaky suspicion that either both or one flex cable is not seated properly, I had this occur as well, and it was the radio end, so I had to remove the top shield and reseat the thing twice before it would work.....it's touchy.
I also have a GTX that was run over by an Airborne Express plane at Sky Harbor, and the funny thing is, that even though the case, shield and rear housing was destroyed, the radio still worked, but the PA did fry soon afterwards, but it still transmits in spec as well as receive!
That radio is just as tough as the P110/GP300 models of the same family.
I think I'll use it as a 'scanner' for the 10 33 CM systems and talkaround in the valley area, and it sure will be easy on a battery when I do talk on it once I bypass the PA.
This radio is looking like a candidate for surgical mods to take place for added experimenting.
