MT2000 Charger Question...(more)

Hi All,
My MT2000 battery came charged as it was a used purchase from Ebay. The battery lasted about 12 hours no problem mostly receive. I then charged the battery in the supplied rapid charger and it took about an hour to turn green. This time the battery only lasted about 5 hours with equal usage as before. What would cause this? Its a newer battery (NiCd) 7.5V.
Should I get a standard charger for it? Does the Rapid charger decrease battery life?
My charger is NTN1171A and I am using power supply 2580162R01. Will this charger also charge NiMh batteries?
Thanks for the help,
Rob

I have used those rapid chargers all the time, and never had a problem. Battery life will vary depending on usage, light setting, scanning, receive traffic, and especially transmit traffic.
The best thing to do is to run it completely dead until the radio won't even light the LED on top anymore, then leave it on the charger overnight. Those chargers will turn green before the battery is @ 100%, but they will keep charging until it is full.
If you want to get the absolute best charger for it, Batdude has the Impres chargers for sale on here.

Hi....I was just about to leave a post asking a similiar question about this charger....I have a JT1000...and I am using the regular rapid-rate drop-in style charger (I think its the one DewAddict is using as well)....my batteries are new, standard hi-cap 1200mah ntn7143 NiCads....they turn green on the charger in about a hour and 15 minutes +/-....now, are you sure these chargers "trickle" charge while on green? I heard they rapid charge to about 85-90% then turn green.....what does Moto mean by "Dual-Rate" chargers? my Vehicular "Jedi" rapid charger has a red light labeled Rapid, and a green light labeled Trickle....(this is the one that also has a yellow light for Repeat/Off)....Also...I do NOT think that these drop-in style rapid chargers charge Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Ion....ONLY NiCad......But what about my Vehicular Charger? does anyone know if it will charge Metal Hydride or Lithium? I have never had ANY problems with my old style (I call it) drop-in rapid charger....I left earlier Posts about the NTN7209 or NTN1168 style Intelli-Charger, the one that holds the radio at a slant....it would turn Green in 4 minutes flat with every battery I tried! and they were drained....and they would charge just fine with the old style and vehicle charger....and I then swapped it for a second unit, and the same thing happened....the guy who sold it to me...said he tested a few new Moto batteries, and to his amazment....he was seeing the same problem! and this was with 3 outta 4 units he tried?? I finally returned it back, and just went back to my good old drop-in rapid rate charger.....in the future, when I can afford it, i would buy the Impres rapid rate drop-in charger and batteries to go with it (Impres)....but its just too Expen$ive for my wallet right now (Unless any of you good ole fellow radio brothers/Hams would take some charity, and hook me up with the set-up...hee hee)......If anyone knows the answers too my questions about the chargers and their chemistry use, I would appreciate it.....Thanks, David KD6RFS BTW....I have noticed that when I slow charge a fully drained battery for 14-16 hours, then it will last longer during a cycle.....(instead of rapid charging)

THe NTN1171A will charge NiCad or NiMh, any yes after about bringing the battery to the 80% mark it flips on the green light and switches into trickle mode.
Dual rate chargers usually refer to the type of charger that gives you a choice on startup. I've seen this on SP10, SP50 type chargers, you drop the radio in it's automatically on trickle, want to kick it up to rapid charge you hit the blue button. But in loose terms any rapid charger could be called dual mode as it does operate at two charge levels, just automatically.
Far as your mobile charge provide the model #, one of them is a Nicad only.
When I was selling these things I would encourage fleet users to use the rapid gang chargers as having that red/green light was kinda making the process idiot proof, when they had a green you knew the battery was at least 80% and when periodically analyzed they would dump batteries that fell below 80 % performance so you knew you wre good to go when the green was on.
For an individual I'm a fan of saving the cash on a rapid charger and using that towards a 2nd battery. As an individual you can easily track your charging times and when you rotate the batteries you always have a fully charged battery ready to go. Some folks have reported that trickle charging only encourages the formation of battery killing dentrites, but I have over a dozen batteries over a decade old that have never been rapid charged.

Great!! I wanted to get a NiMh battery for it so that will work out great.
Thanks to all those who replied, this is a great forum.

On the Jedi "shoe" charger the Green light comes on and the battery is STILL getting charged and if the battery is left in the charger for more than 1 1/2 hours ( after it goes green) it gets over charged.
Jedi "shoe" charger:
Rapid rate RED led = 900 to 1200 ma charge rate
Complete GREEN led = 140 ma charge rate
Most all Motorola Rapid or Dual Rate chargers do the same thing.
The Green rate is too much to leave the battery in the charger for any extended time.

I have here the Motorola "IntelliCharge 2", Model "AAHTN9001B", it looks like the standard rapid charger, has charge + complete, with the LED in the middle of the two.
Anyone have any information on that?
I can't seem to find any info on those.

okay...I checked the model #'s....the drop-in is the NTN1171A....and the Vehicle charger is TDN9816A.....its the all metal square one that you have to "hard wire" in the car....I just connected a cigarette lighter to it, and plug it in when I need to use it....since I dont need it all the time...it has a white wire as well, which I think goes to the radio to make the PAC-RT system work with the repeat/off switch.....anyway, does anyone know if this is a NiCad only rapid charger? or is it like the drop-in 1171A, both NiCad and NiMH?? I think it should be both
It has (3) big lamps, one red that says Rapid...and one green that says trickle...and one yellow for the Rpt/Off switch...its kinda cool....you dont see too many out there like the reg. drop-in style....
the 7209A shoe charger is the one I had nothing but trouble with.....like I stated earlier...it would constantly turn green after 4minutes flat....with new drained nicad batteries......but the drop-in and vehicle charger works fine with the same exact batteries? and this was 2 diffrent NTN7209A units that did this, back to back...anyway, does anyone know about the vehicle charger...if it can do both NiCad and NiMH....and I guess the NTN1171A charger can do both as earlier stated...thats good to hear...because I always thought and was told it was a NiCad only charger??? Thanks, David KD6RFS
