Error code while programming an HT-1000 portable

I'm using a brand-new ribless programming cable, to attempt to program an HT-1000 VHF handheld. When I first try to download and read what is already programmed in it, I get the following error message:
"RIB port communication unsuccessful"
- Probable causes: - TSR background program interference
- Temporary high noise / traffic level
- Please correct. Press any key to continue."
Any idea as to what is really going on here? Unfortunately, I do not yet have the software/programming manual, so not sure what it thinks the problem may be.
Thanks!

The only time I see TSR/noise errors is if you are trying to program the radio through a DOS prompt within Windows. Is this the case with you? If so, you need to get your computer into a real DOS mode, then run the program. Easiest thing to try first is to use a bootable floppy disk to boot the computer into DOS.

Hi Todd,
Actually, I am using an older laptop that has Windows 95 on it. The RSS boots up fine and the various screens are in DOS format. I use RSS for the Spectra on this same machine without any problems. It was only recently that I wanted to use RSS for the HT-1000 portable, and this is as far as I get...

So, I'm still not clear on whether you are trying to program through a DOS command prompt within Windows, or are actually booting into DOS mode through the "reboot in MS-DOS mode" in the shut down menu, or possibly choosing "F8-command prompt only" during boot-up. The RSS itself will run fine in the DOS command prompt under Windows, but the reading/writing of a radio is where there can be problems.

Actually, I am now doing programming just fine, by accessing the RSS via DOS first.
My sincere THANKS to all who responded and helped me out with great suggestions on how to go about it all.
Regards,
Bob

Hi, I am now having a similar problem. I just bought a brand new RIBLESS cable. I am using a 500 MHz laptop, which I never had any problems with beforewith any other software. I am running true DOS and not a DOS window in XP. When I try to read the radio, I get this:
RIB PORT COMMUNICATION UNSUCCESSFUL.
Please correct. Press any key to continue.
I am using version 03.03.00
I also tried running it through a DOS window (just for kicks) and got this:
RIB PORT COMMUNICATION UNSUCCESSFUL.
PROBABLE CAUSES:
RIB has no power.
no RIB or RIB malfunctioning.
Poor connection between RIB and PC.
PC (PC serial card) malfunctioning
I've programmed radios before, but usually with a RIB box and cable. My RIB box took a crap though, so I tried this RIBLESS cable. I really don't want to have to send this cable back to the guy. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Without a known good RIB & cable to try, your options are limited. If you have another Jedi style radio, such as an MTX8000/MTS2000, you could try reading one of those if you have the applicable software. Might help determine if it's a cable, radio, or software issue.
If you can find an older computer to try out, that could help eliminate things too.

Unfortunately I do not have any other Moto radios available to try, and the computer I'm using is the slowest I have. To maybe shed some light on this, I have used this computer with other radios in the past with no problems. I just purchased the radio off of fleabay, and it was programmed for me by the seller before it was shipped, so I doubt it's a bad radio. I do, however, need to make some changes to the programming. I am willing to bet that this RIBLESS cable doesn't work with this radio, but I want to try to make it work before I send the seller a nasty e-mail, lol

Dan,
I still repair the /\/\ RIB's if you need yours repaired.
I know that the HT1000/Jedi can be finikey and puts up the "TSR background program interference
- Temporary high noise / traffic level " error. I usally can get the radio to read/write correctly by turning off the radio then back on. Seemed to me to be a data colision problem, but maybe just coincedence.

I suspect his biggest trouble is the 'ribless' cable he's using.
I've seen many do this same thing, and it's probably due to required leads missing from the programmer, such as the bias, or even the jumpered pins as found on standard cables.
His best bet would be to buy a decent R.I.B and build/buy the necessary cables for his radios and he should not have any troubles whatsoever.
Even the cheap Ebay Kawa R.I.Bs work, I've got two and it actually was worth the $32.00 it originally cost me with shipping.
Inexpensive interface you can tolerate destroying if tinkering with 'new' programming cables and ideas.
I keep one as a spare, just in case...And the fact I can leave it in the service van and not have to worry about losing it to some thief that can outrun my .45 as well.
Dump the 'ribless' cable and get 'real' R.I.Bs and cables and never worry about troubles again for the most part.

A real RLN4008 RIB is pretty easy to build according to the schematics in the service manual or the Batlabs main site, anyway.
