k, i got an icom radio that uses one of those amateur radio style clips. (you know the kind with the lanyard loop on the mic and the coat-hook that you 2-way tape to the dash, yuk). ok, so i'm looking to transplant a moto microphone "hang-up-button" from the back of the mic onto this mic. the icom microphone has plenty of room inside for a nut and bolt or whatever is ultimately needed to fasten the moto mic piece in place. on hand, i only have the black compact microphones like the ones that come with the cdm series radio. i opened one up and it's a no-turning-back kind of procedure to take it out. looks like you have to grind a sort of rivet head down to get the button thingy to come out of this large metal block in the back of the mic.

i was wondering if anybody knows of any other microphones that would be a suitable donor for this swap. i'm hoping for one that just comes off with a nut from the inside or something similar to that. ...then hopefully i can find one used or preferably broken for a really good price.

weird question, i know, but i really hate that icom mic clip. help. lol

Since your employer has a machine shop (over in Bayway), why not make it a project? Should take about 10 minutes to turn one on a lathe, drill & tap it for a bolt. Bet you could sell them here if they were to make a few extra!

i think that shop is shut down, but that's still a good idea. maybe i can find one of the small local shops to turn one out for me. thanks!

ok, i think i came up with something pretty good for only a few cents worth of materials and about 5 minutes of labor. walking through the hardware aisle at my local sears hardware store (i do this on a daily basis) and i noticed the drawers with the t-nuts. we're all familiar with the t-nuts that have the spikes on them that you bang into the wood, but there are other types. they had some that were made to be brad-nailed in place. 3 tiny holes around the brim for the brads. i got one threaded for 10-24 with a 3/4" diameter flange. got a 10-24x3/4" phillips screw (ground down to 5/8"), a washer, drilled the hole and screwed it on. seems pretty secure and cost less than a dollar.

I've made do with a piece from a cellphone swivel disconnect.
They are plastic, but if you are carefull with them.....

oh that's a good idea too! ...never thought of that. oh well, here's a pic of how mine came out.

Try Tower Electronics, they have the buttons for a buck, Go to the Rochester Hamfest website undewr inside vendors and you can get there cataloge, I bought some a ccouple years ago at one of the local fests. They may be a t one near you soon.

That's one thing i always hated about Icom, they can't put a normal hangup button on the mic, noooo, they have to use that stupid loop. I used to have an IC-2000 in my old truck, that mic would always bounce off the hook and fall on the floor at the worst possible time.
