Well my notes from when I did this proceedure have been sitting around collecting dust, so I figured I'd type them up and take some pretty pretty pictures to illustrate the proceedure. Hopefully anyone else that's feeling adventurous will find this usefull.

Remove the channel and volume knob rubber covers, and then the channel and volume knob inserts. Note, these are a pain to remove, much prying is required...
Having worked with Sabers for a few years, I was expecting something on that level of difficulty. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is not the case.
The knob inserts are held on by the two small inner tabs on the side closest to the camera. After gently prying them back with a small screwdriver, they slide off pretty easily.
On the channel selector knob, I found it was easiest to pry the tabs back, then lift upwards from the secure/clear switch knob after removing the light pipe, removing it, the channel number escutcheon, and the knob insert all at once.
EDT: My story didn't exactly have a happy ending.. see
here.

Yeah, the first one I did, the inserts slipped off with a few seconds prying.
The second one I did it was a half hour struggle.
Go figure.
Sorry to hear about your display.

I'm all new to this so I hope I dont offend anyone by asking really stupid questions. I was just wondering what is involved in the software side? I've read from another thread, which mentioned something about writing a S-record into it. I would assume the S-record will need to be from a Model III radio with the same bandsplit? Does this mean the serial number will also be changed? Thanks.

It can be done, but you need LAB software which is illegal and difficult to obtain.
