I got a few govt surplus radios (ht1000) recently and wanted to know if there is a obvious way to tell if the radios has encryption boards installed.

Do you mean remove the front housing and the shield under it?

If you're talking US government they would have gone with SecureNet radios if encryption was required. HT1000's would only take the analog AVS boards which wouldn't meet their standardized formats. Local or State Government possibly but pretty unlikely, they normally go with SecureNet digital encryption as well. I have seen a few HT1000's with AVS boards and they all came from businesses, not secure enough for any governmental organizations.

I'm not sure if thats true, I remember reading somehwere about DES for the HT-1000. Since it uses the same Rf board as the MT-2000 which does do DES, it may have had that capability. BTW the RF board is the same as the Astro, just different connectors.
