Has anyone opened one of the Field programming battery and found out what makes the radio go into programming mode. Just picked my new vhf ht1550 up just wanting to see if I can just modify the radio or not. Thanks

from what i've found it's not worth it for the battery, the parts you can edit are limited. and you can only edit, you can't add. so if you want to add a channel you already have to have one added somewhere with the cps before you can alter it. i wouldn't try to modify the radio, you will void the warrenty. the programming battery was only a $30 upgrade if you got it new if editing frequencies and pl's is all you need it for. you can already edit scan lists and things like that with nothing special. but i'm almost positive that the chip in the battery that makes the battery guage is also the part that tells the radio you can edit with it.

I believe Jeff is right about what's actually doing the triggering... when I had my 1550s, I spent a while trying to figure it out - nothing was immediately obvious.
However, I disagree that FPP isn't useful...
