ADP questions on a SZ 3.x system

We were just told by our MSS that ADP isnt compatable with a 3600 baud CC, but works on a 9600 and conventional.. im trying to figure out what the control channel speed has to do with ENC, is this in fact true or is something else going on?

from the xts 5000 product sheet

ADD: ADP UCM ENCRYPTION Q406 721 $255.00
NOT AVAILABLE with 3600 Trunking and Analog Conventional software Packages. Compatible
with: Q361 (P25 software package); and H35, H37, and H38 software packages ONLY when used
with the Q806 CAI software in the Digital Conventional mode.

and

just in case you think that you can use the DSP based (non-UCM) type of ADP...

nope...

ADD: ADP SOFTWARE DSP BASED ONLY Q667 721 $255.00
NOT AVAILABLE with 3600 Trunking and Analog Conventional software Packages. Compatible
with: Q361 (P25 software package); and H35, H37, and H38 software packages ONLY when used
with the Q806 CAI software in the Digital Conventional mode. NOT COMPATIBLE with: Q159 (UCM Hardware Encryption)

holy crap, hasty's actually knew the right answer.

bizzare.. i wonder what the technical reason is for it to work on conventional but not 3600.. never heard of the control channel speed having anyting to do with ENC

I doubt it's a technical reason, but more a monetary one. It forces agencies who might want to use the ADP to upgrade to a 9600 system. Want to do it in conventional? Fine, but you still need the 9600 flash in it...Mo' Money, Mo' Money...

Force agencies to upgrade to 9600? Motorola?

Well...yes.

Have them show you their "roadmap"

SZ3, SZ4X, ALL 3600 platforms.. the roads are all deadends.

Support for 6809 controllers ends in less than 3 years.

Just ask about buying a new 3600 system.

in the words of one of the motorola guys, its a "forklift upgrade"

That'll be fun, when my state's 95 site (and growing) 3600 baud Omnilink system goes 9600 in a couple of years.

They've been saying it has "teething problems" since they started building it around 1994. I can see another 12 years of "teething problems" coming with 9600 :D

Just tighten your seat belt and hang on - the ride starts getting really exciting going forward.

None of the site controllers from 3600 systems have any role in this brave new world.

Even P25 systems are already affected. The Compact-PCI based controllers that shipped with Smartzone 6.X systems are history. 7.X systems run on Sun boxes.

Sustainment costs for these beasts will be an ever increasing part of our future. Time was - you bought the system and maybe upgraded the software a couple times as new releases added features or fixed "issues".

Then came the Software Subscription Agreement, an annual contract for big $$ that provided all the updates to keep you current. The problem is - maybe that latest software release won't run on your old hardware.

M is now developing a new support plan that will be both software AND hardware so if they change the processors, routers, etc. - you get the new boxes along with the software. Radio is now mostly computer based and the life-cycle of of this stuff is nothing like what we used to expect out of base stations, trunking controllers and so on. Some of this stuff is obsolete in months rather than years.

Explain that to your fiscal folks.

BTW radio people - are you ready to work for the I.T. department? That's already happening in a lot of places.

I'm already a Solaris administrator. Maybe I should go back to school and learn radio!

our radio dept is already under the IT department, and most of us use our networking skills far more than our radio skills. We have been told that if we go 7.x, that it will be even more needed.

Were planning on moving to 7.x from our 4.1 system
It shouldn't be 2 bad I'm already MCSE, CCNP and A+, Net+, and helps with a BSAppSc in information Technology. Our Moscad is already switched to ip and our Staratex uwave network is all ip based so for the radio to go to ip is easy. Now if I just find staff with the right credentials we will be making an easy transition.

Are they running windows on the sun boxes - or are they actually running the smartzone stuff on UNIX/Solaris?

Man, if they are running that stuff on UNIX - thats gotta be some very nice and stable stuff, and 10x easier to admin.

(short of shoddy programming)

SZ runs motorola's own custom version of Solaris.
My 4.1 single zone runs 7 Solaris servers including the redundent Zone Controllers. The rest is Windows stuff.
Windows 2000 server with SQL2000 for the Moscad system and a 2000 server to run the console machines.

It's pretty stable and causes few problems. The actual SZ software though is a bit buggy but I guess when you write vertical software it's pretty hard to do properly as not enough test beds running.

Already have an IP to POCSAG controller for our VHF paging system ( FEDORA 5 core). The PBX I maintain is running a *nix core, along with the voice mail. Both have IP support.

Adapt or die....
