Another GP300 programming problem

I have been trying to program a couple of GP300's and haven't had much success. I keep getting a message that says the it could not open the port and to check the cables and make sure the rib and radio are powered on. I have been using a ribless cable with a 9v battery and I have even tried using the radio battery itself as the power source. I have tried both the CPS and RSS without any success on multiple different radios. I have been able to program other radios using my computer so I know that its not the computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We need more info to even guess at what your problems might be.
Computer type, speed, operating system, etc. etc.
Far as I know the GP300 runs on a DOS RSS only.
If you're not starting the RSS on a DOS platform that
could be some of the problem. The DOS that runs
under W95/98 etc. is not usable in most situations.

I have it running under real dos on an old lap top that normally runs under 98. It is either a 486 or very early pentium. It just keeps saying that the radio needs to be powered up and it is.

There is a programming pin contact between the two battery
contacts on the back of the radio. I'm wondering what type
of contact setup you're using as this program contact is a
usual suspect when the "no radio" problem appears. I used
the "strap on"/velcro box for years before I got smart and
eventually got the regular Motorola setup to do the job and
I've had no problems since. The velcro box used to give me
fits with its no contact problems. I also do NOT use a ribless
setup, just a standard Motorola RIB with the GP300 /\/\
clamp-on plastic with the radio battery clipped to the back of
the clamp-on unit.

when i do this every day , I use a RIB box and the cable that motorola sells us.
the problem i can see any one having is :
the 9V battery not good enough
the programming contact on the back of the radio is dirty
the spring contacts inside of the radio is dirty.
The 5v CPU reg. is faulty

I'll be willing to bet odds that his 'ribless' cable is the real culprit here.
The GP300/P110 was not designed for the 'updated' ribless cables and the data line may be non-existent in that cable, so the computer's handshake is unable to be completed and reports comm port communications failed.
On the programmer, pins #4 and #11 are tied together for the bias(1.7V)
And pin #15 is the BUS+ line that carries the DATA to and from the radio.
Pin #1 is ground.
The above pins are FROM the R.I.B to the radio via the DB-25 connector.
Check your 'ribless' cable against the pins I show above and see if they correspond to the same connections.
If they do, then your 'language' the ribless cable is using is different and can not communicate, so the error shows up.

Check the port settings in the RSS. Mine (for some strange reason) defaulted to COM2 rather than COM1. About drove me nuts because it was so simple that I kept overlooking it. Showed the same symptoms which you describe.
