A large public safety organization has told me that the XTS5000 has
"850 talkgroups or channels". These are 800 MHz units. My Moto literature says they have 512.

Has anyone seen any proof of 850 talkgroups for the XTS5000? This might have something to do with rebanding. Has Moto tighten up their
microcode to add 340 talkgroups???

Yes, starting with firmware R07, XTS5000s support 850 channels/talkgroups.

On a related note, does the XTS2500 now do 512 modes?

Yes, the Model 2 and 3 XTX2500 does 512 modes and the Model 1 & 1.5
does 96 with the R07 firmware.

I have to ask.
Has anyone ever heard of an agency that has needed more than 512 talk groups.( apart from the techs that want every channel in their radio)

Without a doubt- take a look at any major big-city system on radioreference.

Look at how many talkgroups they have. Add other adjacent cities/towns and you'll have one full radio.

Absolutely. I was a member of one agency who have around 450 modes in their portable radios - if they hadn't taken the police channel plan out due to poorly trained users talking to each other on the cops dispatch channels etc, they'd exceed 512.

Its also nice to know that I still have open channels so should I need to add additional channels/modes I can without any issues and on the fly.

As an example, with my XTS3K I have different personalities saved on a thumb drive for different applications i.e. hurricane activations & drills, and then my "regular configuration.

With my XTS2500 it's all loaded all the time.

I find 15 channels for the police plenty and then a dozen hurricane channels fine.

It was announced at the last Motorola Trunked User Group meeting.

CPS OTA? Uh, yeah... I predict it'll take forever, especially for loaded codeplugs (unless they get *really* smart about things) and, due to user incompetence, will result in radios improperly reloaded (probably by accident).

850 talkgroups should be enough for anyone in the field. If you're a sysadmin, bring your programming gear with you.

Planned for XTS/XTL 5000/2500 which support ASTRO 25 IV&D
- XTL/XTS 1500 support to follow after initial launch

TETRA systems already support that. No idea how well it works though.
