For a convertacom for an ht 1550 there is a software configuration tool. Is there a special cable to go from the computer or will a regular computer serial cable work? When I try it I get a rs-232 timout error message.

Yes there is a specific cable for the unit. There is a schematic in the user manual so you can build your own (if you so choose).
