Does exact CPS version matter?

Hello,
I just had a quick question regarding the programming of radios. Does the version of CPS software need to be exactly the same as the version number of the radio?
For example I have a GP340 which on the label states its version R03.03.00. I also have CPS software for that model line, and the software is version D03.02.01 (KIT No. ENVN4005D, 06-Apr-2000). Can we reuse that CPS version for this radio, or will we need to purchase a version that matches?
I do notice that there is a matching CPS version available which is R03.03.00 (KIT No. ENVN4005K, 30-SEP-2004). Do you think the difference between R03.03.00 and D03.02.01 will matter, since the software seems slightly older? If so would it make since to invest in the newest CPS for that model line (R03.05.00) if it were backward compatible with all models?
Thank you.
