Hello All:
I got a GP300 thats giving me problems which ill ask about in another posting but brings up these qestions as to whether i could use the narrow band P110 on a wide band application.
Ok ive searched abit and found that the narrow band does work with wide band but softer audio- im thinking.
The situation is i want to use a P110 narrow band with the others being a mix of P110/GP300s in wide band at VHF freqs. (Simplex)
I found in the settings that you could set the P110 narrow band for mike gains of = -3db or 0db or +3db or +6db gains.
Also found that you could change the setting from 2.5 khz to 5 khz in the radio.
And also noticed you could change the PL setting from 350 to 500 hz.
Ok = with these options available could i set the radio for a higher mike gain to make it sound the same as the wide banders ?
Also change the 2.5 khz to 5 khz wide band as found on wide band radios of the P110/GP300 series and get this radio to blend in with the wide band radios with out having the diference in audios?
Corect me if im wrong but even if the narrow band is still not the transmit width of a wide band then couldnt i make these 3 above mentuioned changes to the radios settings = wouldnt it make the radio seem the same as the wide band radios ?
Am i getting the right idea on the softer audio that i read aout in the search options i did ?
Explain to me the softer audio = Is it the narrow band sounds softer to a wide band or the other way around ?
Can someone bring me up to speed on this = Im runnin but blind .

The deviation determins the 'volume' of the transmitted signal.

So, if you transmit on a radio with the transmitter deviation set for +/- 5khz you would have X volume at the receiving radio.
Changing the transmit deviation to +/- 2.5khz, "narrowband", you would have 1/2 X or one half the volume at the receiver. ( the receiver is "wideband, and is not changed).


Now the second part of your question... You would have to change the IF filters in the GP300/P110 "Narrowband" radio to allow the wider, +/- 5khz deviation (modulation) thru the receiver. Otherwise the wider deviation will tend to be clipped off in the narrower IF filters in the "narrowband" receiver and the resulting distorted audio at the speaker.

Yup, like Will said you will need to swap out some hardware for it to work properly. Motorola makes conversion kits for these radios to accomplish this but in reality P110's are going under $70, much easier to pick one up and sell what you have, probably won't me much out of pocket in the end.
