Ok I have a syntor x 9000 (model no. T73VBJ704BK) (Serial No. 483HKY0212) and a control head whose model no. is HCN1036E. I cannot get the unit to power up. I apply power to the unit after all the cables are hooked up and nothing happens. Any suggestions? I opened up the radio to look for any signs of shoring and I check the cable with a meter to see if power runs though it and it does. Please help me thanks! I want to use this radio as a ham radio.

Did you hook up the orange and green wires on the control head end of the cable to +12v? Also, have you tried transmitting, or injecting an RF signal, to see if maybe the display on the head is bad?

Yes I did hook up the two orange and green wires. I did however forget to mention that when I try to power on the radio, the head buttons light up for a split second then shut off. I tried to transmit and nothing happens either.

One thing I would mention...The model number noted is for a Syntor X, not an X9000.

You may want to check the part number of the personality board and the common circuits board to ensure this is a conversion radio and that you are NOT trying to put an X9000 head on a Syntor X radio.

If this is the case, it won't work. Game over, thanks for playing.

PS: Part number for the common circuits is HLN4906 and the personality board is HLN5299 or HLN4925.

Beat me to it George.. That''s what i was thinking.

Remove the bottom cover and see if it has a memory module plugged onto the personality board, if does then its a Syntor X. Or even quicker the label on the front of the radio where the handle is should show either Syntor X or X9000.

Yep you guys are right. It is a syntor X not a syntor x 9000. That explains why nothing seems to work. Which head will work for this then so I don't purchase the wrong head again. Thanks guys for your help.

The Syntor X uses the old style rotary control head, or a push button sys 90 style control set. You will need a different control head, control cable, mic, and even the speaker has a different connector.

The only thing i wonder about is if putting the X9000 head on it with the incorrect control cable fried something in the radio now.

I hope not. Would it have possibly damaged the control head?

Don't know, never did it by mistake. I could get the pinout of the X9000 and the X and put them side by side and see if there is any obvious killers, B+ where it shouldn't be, ground where it shouldn't be, etc.. But even then it would be a guess.

Your best bet is to get a Syntor X control set and try it. Your not going to hurt the rotary head if something is messed up in the radio now.

Here is an example of a Sys 90 pushbutton control set.

My vote is to get an x9000 drawer instead of a control group for an X. May be a little more expensive but a much nicer unit control wise and programming is easier.

Yep, that's what I plan to do. I might get the X head and use it sometime down the road if I find a decent one. Thanks everyone for all your help.

It is also possible to convert your Syntor X radio drawer into a Syntor X 9000 with the correct parts.

True, but that means buying an X9000 anyway to scavenge the parts!
