Sounds like the patient needs to have a second opinion
from another doctor.

Is he double sure that he has 12 volts on the main 2-pin connector as well as 12 volts going into the bottom of the tray part of the radio? You need +12 in 2 places, -12 in 1 place. It bothers me that you say this is happening in several sets. I think he may be hooking up something wrong..

Well, a fail 01/90 is a Hardware Failure. That said, it might not totally be SOL. I believe I've had that error come across an MCS2000 before. Is it not taking the codeplug at all now? Or, is it even turning on? If it's turning on, but just not accepting a codeplug write, if you can get your hands on MTSX Lab, use that with the F4/F8 and see if you can force the codeplug into the radio.
Failing that, you might be looking at a new board.

I am betting its a voltage / connection issue. More than likely the cables aren't connecting right or all the way.

You mean the pin connector for the control head ?
as for the occurance of this problem with several sets, these sets comes for maintenance already with this failure message before he opens it.

"Is it not taking the codeplug at all now? " : you mean the software of the set ?
And I don't have the MTSX Lab,is it a software for managing the set? I've the official MCS software that comes along with the new set, should i try communicating with the set through it?
If not, where can i get the MTSX lab from ? also i'm wondering if i can get a version or a copy of the service manual !

Fail 01/90 means the control head is not communicating with the main body of the radio. There can be several causes of the problem. You generally see this error more with remote head installs. A break in one of the remote cable wires can cause this error...as well if the main body isn't getting proper power but the head is, you can also see that error.
The few complete dash-mount models I've seen this error on, I've been able to source the problem to poor connections either in the control head, or on the main board interconnect socket pins. As well, on older units (pre '99) there's the voltage regulator issue which is covered on Batlabs.
I personally haven't seen this error as a result of any sort of LAB mishap, so I'd tend to believe it's strictly hardware related.

Just a thought here:
Is this one of the supervisors at the new Motorola repair facility posting this question?
Maybe they have found Batlabs is a good way to get advice on how to repair radios.

Hello Todd , can i have your email ?
Where's the voltage regulator issue is covered here ?

You can send me an email by clicking on the 'email' icon in my posts. The information on the voltage regulator issue can be found here:
http://www.batlabs.com/gm900.html
Here's the except on the issue:
Are you having a problem with the control heads on your MCS2000? There is a bulletin out the 5 volt regulator is falling off of the board in the radio (not the head). It should be U500 and its next to the audio IC. Where the metal fingers clamp down the board you need to reflow the solder to this regulator if it has not already come undone. Also, cut the middle finger off the metal clamp that presses down on it. This clamp puts to much pressure on the solder joint. The common failure is the 01/90 fail code or the radio is just plain dead. It has been rectified on the later models after 1999.

while having errors or particulary Fail 01/90 can the radio still be read through the CPS programm ?
Also for the rib,i heared it needs 13.8 V to be operated! i'm operating it with DCV 12 and the operation led is on,is there any chance that it's not working ?
