I have a Specra model no. D44ZXA5JC7AK. Is there any way I can use this radio as a conventional radio?

The C7 should do both trunking and conventional. You just have to program it.

Is there something I'm doing wrong then because I've been through the entire rss it seems like and I cannot change it to conventional?

You probably have to keep one trunking channel in it all the time, but you should be able to add conventional modes.
Read the codeplug: F3, F2, F10.
Change/Create/View Codeplug: F4.
Mode Configuration: F5.
You'll have to add modes through the Mode Utility F9.

What is confusing about the RSS is that there are two mode utilities: one for trunking and one for conventional.

Tell me about it...I program a Spectra about once every two years, and it seems like I have to relearn it every time!

Not only the mode utilities are difficult to keep straight, but the dual control head option in the RSS is also a possible trouble spot for many as well..
