Best lo-band portable?

So just as the subject says....what's your experience with Moto lo-band portables? Any favorite models? Pro's and con's....
Any info would be much appreciated.

The MT 1000 has served my fire department well over the years. It beats the pants off some of the equipment motorola is selling today. Mine has been wet, bumped, dropped and in extreme heat and is still working today. Some of the local FDs used the 750's before we all went up to either UHF or VHF, and they weren't as happy with them. Hope this helps.

MT1000's are pretty nice, but I believe they have narrower bandsplits vs the Pro series.
I like both, I have used both. I most likely would have gone with a MT1000 had the HT1250 I bought wasn't at such a good price.

Hard to beat the trusty MT1000 or its cheaper version the P200.

Has anyone done a VCO modification for up to 54 Mhz operation?

I haven't done it, but I downloaded the article. You have to unsolder a _lot_ of connections, change a couple of SMT caps, and put it all back together again. It looks tedious, but doable.

Old School: MT1000/P200 Series
Current Make: Kenwood TK190. Best thing out there.

If you are looking used, definately the MT1000 over the newer Waris series. And if you are looking new again stay away from the Waris series and go for the Kenwood TK-190.......those are great radios. I have V, U and LoV in the TK-X90 series and they are excellent radios.

MT1000 all the way, although a MT500 sure last longer battery wise but of course the crystals for a Mt500 cost more than a Mt1000 and the MT500 doesn't scan.
The mod to take it to 54 MHz is not as bad as some make it to be.
I did the original mod and wrote the article up a few months ago and have done 2 others since then, one was a high split moved to 6 meters and another was a mid split which I moved down to 10 meters.
I'm still documenting the 10 meter mod but may not publish it since it took a total preselector/receiver front end re-design, Agilent ADS and a HP 8753D is not something everyone has in their workshops.
Just take your time and follow the pictures in the modification document and you shouldn't have any problems getting it out of the band from the 42-50 split up to 54 Mhz.
