GTX Portable - Codeplug inside housing?

Scenario: 2 GTX portables, 1 900mhz, 1 800mhz. 800 has a bad display so I figured I would just swap the front housings. OK, got that done easy enough.

But now when I read the 800 radio with the housing from the 900 radio, it reads the 900's codeplug! Serial number, model# and all!

Anyone seen this before?

yep... thats where the memory be stored at.

On the GTX, both 800 and 900, as well as the LTS2000.

All codeplug data is stored in the display/keypad, and swapping the 800 radio's case will only bring up the 900's CP data.

Just as motoMax300 stated...

The LTS2000 is the same way, in fact, aside from a diferent RSS package, they are the same radios.

The service manual covers both models and PP and LTR formats.

I didn't believe it until I checked the service manual: the display/keypad assembly contains the microprocessor and codeplug memory. In fact, it's the entire "logic board" of the radio. The main electronics board contains the transmit and receive RF, IF, audio, synthesizer, etc sections. Who'd have thought...

What a mess you could make out of mixing and matching case/display and RF board parts.

Different firmware as well between the PP & LTR, as well as for the Full SmartZone capable LTS2000. The regular SmartNet LTS & PP GTX are identical though...you can turn one into the other with LAB & the applicable codeplug.

When our local telco turned off their old PP system & basically forced people to switch to their new SZOL, we converted lots of customer's existing GTX portables into full SmartZone LTS units by ordering in a new LTS front controller board & initializing it with a SmartZone capable LTS codeplug. Approx $350 for the board, as opposed to $1500+ (at the time) for a whole new radio.
