ASTRO TRS system key question...

Let me start by saying that I am NOT trying to use a system key improperly or access a TRS without authorization. I don't have the system key and I am not trying to get it! I am a user of the state system and have a question about changing talkgroups assgignments (organization in the radio...) via our ocal shop who have the software but not the system key.

Do I have to have a system key loaded in the ASTRO CPS to make changes to the "talkgroup assignment to zone" set up? And can I add talkgroups to a new zone in the radio also without the system key being loaded?

We are using XTL5000 and XTS5000 7/800 radios on a SmartZone Omnilink 9600 all-digital system.

Thanks,
JJ

you can change the assignments in the zone personality screen, you just can't change anything under the trunking personality screens... i.e. adding new talkgroups, etc.

you can add zones, etc. as long as you are using the same talkgroups/systems that are currently in the radio.

OK, thanks for the info...
Now a follow up question- We have a W5 head on the XTL5000 radios. Flash: 500008-001484-4
Can one of the three buttons on the right hand side of the face be programmed as a "direct mode access" type button?

the top row is:

SECure ZnUP ZnDN Scan SELect

and the first two side buttons are unprogrammed and the third is for "Site" display and to make it scan sites on a long press.

What I want it to do is go directly to one of the NPSPAC channels on a keypress. The analog NPSPAC channels are programmed into the radio in one of the Zones.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
JJ

by the way- I know the DEK for Direct mode access is available, but I have the two unused buttons and did not know if it was possible.
Thanks,
JJ

If I understand you correctly...

The DIR button allows for "talkaroud/direct" operation. If your on a repeated channel, if you press the DIR button, it will cause the radio to transmit on the repeater output freq (if direct is enabled in the radio, usually is). All this lets you do is bypass the repeater so you can talk to a close by radio without the entire world on the repeater hearing you.

If you had a W7/W9 head, you can press and hold the HOME button and directly go to a channel, but it requires the number keypad so you can enter the number.

If you have a DEK, you can program the DEK button to go directly to a preprogrammed channel assigned to that DEK button.

I think you can preprogram one of the top row buttons for a direct channel on the control head, but I need to fire up my XTL to double check. For some reason I want to say I remember on one of the mobile lines (spectra etc) that you could do this.

We have the W5 head- 5 across the top and 3 on the middle right hand side.

the first two on the right are unprogrammed and the third that is labeled "Dir" is actually programmed to be the "site" button to give me a display of my currently affiliated site and the RSSI level of the site.

I am looking into programming the two unued buttons as the direct mode acces buttons... that is- Can I give one keypress and the radio change to a certain mode.

I know the home key can do this. Thanks for any help,
JJ

That option is available for the AStro Spectra, but not the XTL as far as I can tell. The ASTRO Talkgroup select is available, but that will not do what you want.

You will need to find a DEK and someone to reprogram the radio for the modes you want the DEK to go to.

So in short, looks like your out of luck.
