As another former Moto tech: I don't want to send any of my radios down to find out!
Keep the peace(es).

It wouldn't matter if they were coming back with a 100% success rate. The fact of the matter is that they're being shipped out of America to be repaired by MEXICANS. It's bad enough the United States has such a problem with illegal immigrants in the country, but now they have to export work? Come on. Where will it end? </rant>

we sent three HT1250's for flat rate around 10/25. We got them back the first part of november. Two of them were DOA, the third (which went in for a pixellated display), came back with the problem not fixed and the blue seal sticking up around the frame. Meximonkey's butchered them and back they went and still waiting on them. These will be the last Mototrash portables we buy, already ordered some Kenwood TK-3170's to replace them.
At least KENWOOD keeps their depots stateside and Kenwood Comm HQ is right here in Atlanta (Gwinnett county).
I will never buy a new Motorola radio again. Ever. Only keep the XTS3000 around because our new metrowide system requires a SZOL P25 radio.

Although turn times have slowed down some since El Paso got fully up and running, I've been satisfied. Sent two HT1250s still under warranty with synthesizers unlocking intermittently, one came back with new back cover kit and other with back cover kit AND front cover kit. So in all fairness, depot service is *OK*, but not quite as good as it was from Elgin.

overall, moderately happy.
they fixed four totally DOA xts radios of mine...
but
they didn't fix the secure modules at all, even though this was specifically on the form for repair.
*and*
my VHF AS3 that was sent in came back as an 800MHz radio....
if i was writing request for bid proposals for my local/state gov't - i would mandate that to be considered one must perform repairs inside the USA.... that would make moto sit up and pay attention.

Well, at least you'd know it would get fixed properly the first time. And it's "EH", not "AY".
A lot of the repair work for Canada is done at the Toronto depot, so we've been less affected by the move to Mexico. Although, certain models do go south for repair, and there is definitely 1) Longer turn-around time and 2) Improper repairs.
Some of what I've seen so far...12 weeks turn around time for an LCS2000. Our local Motorola rep had to get involved to even get it back in that time frame...and when it came back,
it had no RX at all!! Sent it back out same day, and it's been gone another 4 weeks at this point. Have another that's been gone 6 weeks at this point...with no ETA being given for it's return. Luckily, our local Motorola office has given us loaners in the meantime.
Astro Spectra went out for "ER 09/10" on display (defective encryption module). Paperwork accompanying "repaired" unit said they replaced vocon, controller, and encryption module. Fine, except firmware versions were
lower than what the radio went in with, and module was DVP-XL instead of DES-OFB/DES-XL.

They should move their all their repairs to Canada! We just might ship it back with some Tim Hortons and REAL beer.
As for depot repairs in Canada, I had sent in a Radius for the flat-rate program a few years ago. I'm not sure which depot it went to, but I had it back in 4 days. Now, I don't live that far from the Markham depot so I'm sure that's got something to do with it, but I'd be afraid if it went down to Mexico it'd come back as a GTX, probably with an LCS head.

Kenwwod in Canada sold off their parts/service a couple of years ago.
I assume it will just be a matter of time for the same in the US.

Isn't your issue, then, really with the
Americans that are exporting the work? All the Mexicans (in Mexico) have done is get paid less than we do. (And I'm sure, given the chance, they wouldn't choose it to be that way.)
All issues of race aside, though, it sounds like they really need to get their act together... Am I understanding correctly that things are coming back
more broken then when they went in? (I've got a couple radios that could use some repairs... It's looking like I'll try to get them repaired locally instead of sending them to Big M.)

My issue isn't with race. I could care less who is working on my radio. You could be male, female, gay, straight, white, black, asian, hispanic - I don't care. However, I DO take issue with this work being done outside of the United States/Canada.
I never said I have a problem with the Mexicans. My problem is with Motorola for exporting the work to Mexico.

I depot a handfull of pagers & radios per week. (A public safety shop). So far, so good.
But I keep getting strange phone calls and emails from Motorola customer service, letting me know what the current turn-around time is. And if I'm satisfied. I can almost hear the unsteadiness in their voices like they know there is a problem. Like they're unsure. Its just plain strange.

I really miss working on your radios. I would be willing to go back and work for the big M and fix radios again if offered the chance. The reason your radios come back repaired with low quality is the techs had about 2-3 weeks training. Most the techs never seen radios or test equipment until the big M introduced them to the crash course. I wish there was somthing you as customers could do to get my job back and have you feel secure with your repairs comming back.I just hope if I was in a life or death situation that the police or paramedics were using nonmotorola radios.

There's nothing wrong with the /\/\ product! It's strictly a Corporate American Management Business Decision of "GREED" that allows this "Exporting of USA Work or Employment!"
Do you think the U.S. Federal Market Group's customer agencies have to put up with the Mexican Subscriber Depot Repairs? Of course NOT! Why? Well there was a contract put in place probably between /\/\'s Corporate American Management, USFMG (Sales) and the highest level U.S. Federal Government Personnel so their Subscriber and Infrastructure Products S-T-A-Y in the U.S.A. (at a Maryland Depot) for ALL Repairs!
Every U.S. citizen I knew and still know at the /\/\ Schaumburg campus took and still take Great Pride in their professional craftsmenship from the Design and Development Engineers, the Factory's Test Technicians and the Technical Personnel that were employed in the former /\/\ owned Depots out in Elgin, Illimois.
The /\/\ Corporate American Management Team with their "MBA" Degrees make these S-T-U-P-I-D decisions since they're so far removed from the day to day equipment problems and the customer compliants that they only have tunnel vision seeing the Financial Bottom Line and to HECK with the everyday customers!
