I've got a M1 I'm trying to up to a M3, and after putting everything back together the radio will not turn on. Removing both flex brackets (keypad and LCD) results in the radio working as normal, however attaching either flex bracket (with or without the actual component installed) leads to the radio not turning on upon reassembly. So basically now the radio only works with both of the flex brackets removed (even if there is no LCD or keypad attached).

In speaking with a friend from the board, it seems as though the firmware in my radio (07.01.01.00) allows the radio to know that there is a model mismatch, thus preventing it from booting.

Is this the case, and if so-- it would appear to me that there is no way to verify that the upgrade went as planned until after the software side has been taken care of as well?

On the flex brackets the hold the flexes to the controller, make sure the spring fingers are going on TOP of the flex - a few times I have seen the fingers go underneath and short out the contacts on the controler board.


The firmware isnt aware that you have added the LCD and keypad - the M1 codeplug will essentially tell the controller to ignore the LCD and keypad.

Ive quickly outlined the fingers that im talking about - in these pics you can see the fingers are on top... make sure this is the case as if they slip underneath the flex you will get the sympton that you describe..

Thanks for the tip bro, unfortunately (for me) I double checked that the flex was properly seated in the bracket and that there were no contacts stuck where they should not be. It worked fine with the brackets on before I started playing around this afternoon, and now it will not work at all if the flex brackets are attached (even with no LCD or keypad in)

Theres usually a short when the radio wont boot like that, but as you say there is no short...

its got me stumped!

The brackets have little springy metal fingers - I think this is what he's referring to. Although you really gotta work at it to get those things stuck under the flex.

Keep in mind, that if you don't have the flexes there, you have to reinsert that clear plastic blank, otherwise the clips will short out the board.

The radio's firmware shouldn't matter. I've upgraded R07.xx units before with no problem. The radio should emit its POST beep, and be operational. The screen will power up, display "SELF TEST", and sit that way, until you take care of the software side of the house.

Is that what you're experiencing? If so, it's perfectly normal.

The radio should still be functional as a model 1 radio, just the display wont function and if you press any of the keys it will bonk at you.

Actually, the keys shouldn't bonk at you at all, since the radio doesn't know they're there and thus isn't processing inputs from them.

They definitely bonk at you. Ive seen it first hand....

The controller still knows the keys are there - they trigger an interrupt in the radios firmware regardless of what model codeplug is in the radio.. Remember the firmware is the bit that controls the I/O, and all the radios, M1, 2 or 3 have exactly the same firmware, so it still processes the interrupt. when the codeplug tells the radio - "Hey im a model one here, and we will have none of that keypad action thankyou" - the firmware then issues a bonk to let you know that you bought a model 1 radio.

I don't recall them bonking at me when I did my upgrades, but it's entirely possible.

OK, so I took a closer look at akardam's pictures and realized I was not supposed to intertwine the flex with the bracket. Just place the bracket over the flex connecter and reattach. Radio works great, now for the software side.
