I have just recently begun to do motorola programming and purchased a use SmartRIB, (no doc's included) and was wondering about the switch...

The switch is a 3 position switch with off in the center, on being on the top and XP on the bottom. I was able to figgure out what off and on are for, but what is the xp position for?

The XP position is only used when aligning a radio's receiver and electromagnetic intererence (EMI) from the SmartRib is degrading radio performance. It pull's the crystal operating freq of the Smart Rib causing the clock freq to change moving any generated electrical noise off the current radio receiver channel.

Is it really that complex? I ask because I was under the impression 'XP' in this context means 'External Power.'

I seem to remember that my own SmartRIB would not power up with the switch in the normal 'On' position if there was no battery installed and the AC adapter was connected, but it would power up in 'XP.' Or perhaps I'm having hullabalutions...

Yes, my smartrib manual indicates XP is crystal pull, for use in service scenarios. When the unit may interfere with the radio's recieve frequency.

I have never had to use it.

I have had top use it once while tuning a radio and The sinad was constantly bad till I threw the switch.
It is just lick as I'm pretty random which way I sitch it on.
