Programming

I have never programmed or even seen it done. What is involved mainly? How hard is it? I am getting an HT1250 programmed now and they are having problems with programming it and they have had the radio for a week. The tech working on it this morning said even with almost no interruptions, probably wouldn't be done. Why?

Read through this topic. It might explain why it takes longer than you'd expect.

Since you said they "are having problems programming it", I would suspect they found a newer version of the software was required and had to be ordered.

They are thinking the radio might be locked out. How hard is it to figure out the code?

Also, how do you go about getting LEGAL software? (Can't stress the legal enough) I know you have to sign a contract with Motorola, but what else is involved? Like price of the software.

I understand that there are some cases where a locked out HT1250 can not be cleared and has to go back to Motorola for board replacement.

I don't have specific software prices but it is usually about $300 plus you need the RIB and cable for about another $300. Older radios programmed with RSS require a slow 486 or 386 computer running DOS 6.22 so you are looking at quite an investment unless you have a lot of a particular model radio to program. Even once you make the basic investment in a RIB and computer, you are looking at another $300-400 for additional software and cables for each additional radio models you want to service.

ask them some more specific questions like how they are locked out of it? was the radio working when you took it to them? you can't lock the software on that radio unless it's a trunking radio, you can only lock the power up with the keypad but even then they can still read the radio.
