HT1000 question

Again fellas, I apologize, I don't know anything about radios....YET....
I am looking at a portable...it's an HT 1000 VHF...I am gonna use it in the bush for logging applications.
The reason I am going portable,is that I have no room to mount anything permanent in my skidder, plus there is no way to lock it up after the shift is over.......
I can get one for $300 Canadian funds, comes with a new mic and spare battery and a new rapid charger...it's a 16 channel model.......95% shape
Is this gonna work for me?
The range will be anywhere from 50 yards to 2 miles, max distance..
I've also heard about "narrow band" in the near future in our area..will this radio be able to make the switch over,or will I have to get a new one eventually or ????
Thanks again for all the help, any advice and experiences are greatly appreciated
