I was desperate for RSS for a special version of MC micro.
To make the long story short, since I had no other choice,
I wrote my own. And here's the question:

Is it Moto-legal to share it, I can keep it for my own, or should I destroy it at once?

Remove any traces that show you wrote it, put it on a thumb drive, place it in a small sealed container, and then attach said container to an array of helium balloons and launch.

Nothing wrong with writing your own moto software. It's legal (in the USA) as long as you are not breaking any encryption algos in the radios memory or codeplug.

As for giving it away, can't say..... A company in Canada got sued for writing some GP300 s/w and selling it. Motorola had a problem with these guys because they were selling it.

I never read anywhere in motorola radio litature that states you HAVE to use their software to program radios. Look at all the free utility motorola cellular software out there for doing almost anything to your mototrola phone.

I read on the board a while ago someboedy asking if it could be done, and one of the replies said something to the effect that the codeplug itself is proprietary /\/\ software, and figuring out how it works involves reverse-engineering, and that violates the terms of service. Maybe a search might show something.

None the less, great job on writing your own software though!

We had this discussion at Dayton a couple of years ago with a board member who is doing some really cool stuff with a radio series.

I believe he wrote his own RSS, but...it also involved (I think) writing his own firmware or using a different EEPROM. As long as you can show in your work that you came up with everything on your own, or cite sources, you should be good to go. Again, IIRC this was a software and hardware soultion. What was used (and I think cited in a court case that moto lost years ago) was that Moto's own published "white paper" or the such could be used...since Moto "released" it into the wild. I wasn to say it concered the SB9600 protocol.

I would say if your not selling it, you should be good...even if overseas. Moto doesn't seem too concered about legecy out of support products.

Now, if you did something on the ASTRO line, there would be some concern.

Sandy Ganz (of the Sandy RIB) aka Motradio has written personal RSS called Sprog which programs the Syntor, SyntorX, and MCX100 radios.
