First post! Here's my equipment:
CDM1250
AARKN4083A Cable
Prof CPS R06.01.00FD
MTX380/MTX3850 CPS R01.03.02
Problem:
Can't read the radio! Cable is connected, radio is on. When I go to read the radio on COM3 (port used) I get: "Couldn't open port, Check device/RIB are powered, bla, bla, etc.". What am I missing?

check your rib box power, battery on rib, try different com port, is this a factory cable? shut down any other programs that might have control over your com port.

Cable is from the factory. According to Motorola and what I've been reading here I don't need a RIB. Cable is hooked to my printer port.

you need a radio interface box (RIB) to program your radio. read this link.

More specifically, the AARKN4083A cable is not a RIB-less cable. The Motorola RIB-less cable for the CDM series radio is their part number AARKN4081B.
You can either obtain a RIB (part number RLN4008E), or you can obtain the RIB-less cable listed above.
It also might not be a bad idea to obtain the latest version of the CPS. I believe it's up around R06.07.xx.

Did you set the RSS to the com3 port your trying to use?
Are you sure the interface cable is good?
Can you read another radio with the same setup?

Well, I just finished talking to Motorola. Yep, we spent a lot of money on these radios and can't even program them. The cable provided with the radios is NOT RIB-less (they said it was). So now we have to buy more equipment:
RIB box
"Power pack"?!
USB to serial converter cable!! WTF!
Can this radio be programmed thru the mic jack?

You will need a USB to Serial converter if you want to program the radio using a computer that lacks a serial port, since the RIB speaks to the computer over a serial connection.
Per the CDM page on Batlabs, you can program a CDM through the microphone port using a Maxtrac cable:
http://www.batlabs.com/htpro.html
You will still need a RIB to use that cable, and you will not be able to do flash upgrades and the like. However for day to day programming it will work fine.
Hope this helps.
