xts external audio question

I have an xts-2500 portable that I would like to build an interface for that will pick off the audio off the side connector... i was wanting to use some spring pins just like that are used in speaker mics to feed audio to an external amplified speaker ( a motorola speaker). Can anyone help me and direct me with how I must go about doing this and what pads I need to connect to. Has anyone ever done this before. And If you did, was the audio better than the crap out of the stock speaker?

Let me know. I would appreciate any input..

Haven't done it, so no idea about sound quality.

If you look at the radio from the side, the universal connector has two columns of contacts. The longer column, towards the front of the radio, starts with "1" at the top and contains the odd-numbered contacts. The shorter column to the back of the radio has--you guessed it--the even numbered contacts.

If you re-use a spkr mic cord, the colors below should apply, but check to be sure:

1,8 GND (Red)
2 Ext Spkr (Yellow)
3 Ext Mic (Blue)
4 B+ (Black)
5 PTT/Opt Sel 2 (Orange)
6 Speaker Common (Brown)
7 N/C

What about using the earphone jack on a speaker mic and hooking it to a powered speaker?

I had thought of using a speaker mic with the speaker jack, however, I do not have one lying around. What I do have here is a little adapter, and I don't know its official name, but it is an adapter that snaps onto the side connector and it has a push button and a screw in type 1/8" phono jack that probably has multi connector rings on it. I was going to attempt to modify that adapter to provide me audio out.

Has anyone messed with an external speaker hooked up to an xts2500 and can you tell me if the audio is any better than it is with the internal speaker. Because mine sounds like total crap when compared to other models of xts's

Thanks,

Dave

Sounds like you have a BDN6676 adapter, which will give you audio at the 3.5mm connection.

Just a question, but where did your 2500 come from? If it is used (which I assume it is or you would have sent it back for warranty service), was it used in an environment that could have allowed dirt or especially metal filings to collect on the speaker?

I used to service radios used in a sawmill, and they always had tiny pieces of steel stuck to the speaker cone. They would have low volume and sound like crap. The metal would increase the mass that would need to be moved, then when the speaker did move, the filings would vibrate on the cone.

If I understand what you are trying to do I think this adapter would work for you. We used to have a set up similar to this in our fire station and it was plugged into an amp and then the amp was wired to the speaker system.
